Silkie thread!

Also, I was just thinking this last night. I have 5 regular size hens and one Silkie. Is the silkie going to freeze to death not roosting with the other girls at night? Or should I only make all low roosts so its equal?

My one silkie girl roosts with the big girls. I have two roosts at different heights and she always has at least 1-2 hens with her. I worried about that too but I've never found her alone. My roosts are 2x4's with the 4" side flat. I did it this way so they could lay on their feet and keep them warm in the cold winter. Now, my silkie roo on the other hand has been sleeping by himself in a nesting box. LOL - this is something new so I don't know what's going on with him. However, it's warm enough now that I don't worry about him getting cold. Hopefully he'll get his butt back to the others come next fall.

Oh thanks! How tall is the shortest roost?

I'm trying to find silkies in West Virginia (holy crap it's harder than one would think!) and I have a lady who will sell me her trio (two hens and a roo) for $65. I'm wondering if that's a good price? I'm really new to this and unsure about pricing of critters :p

Both of those hen houses are extreme bad azz! Love it. Matt (my husband) would laugh at me... but why wouldn't you want something cute in your yard rather then just a box? I was looking at the coops on Chicken Saloon. Those are not bad. Any thoughts? For $500. Would cost almost as much in the end to build one I think.

Sanna! Thats so cool! Im going to look online for it.

Ours cost us less than $500 to build. Whenever we looked at any being sold at the tractor stores, they were made of very cheap material - very easy for a predator to get into.

I am sure your husband could build something similar and better for that price or less.

I wanted to make sure mine wasn't an eye sore to the neighbors. Even though we are on acreage, we can see into each others backyards. Since we have built that, one neighbor has already ordered baby chicks and the other is thinking about how to do it.

The price depends on if they are Show Quality or Pet Quality and even the colors can affect the price.

Can you have chickens shipped to your zip code? I had mine shipped from East Coast Silkies from North Carolina. I live in Kansas City, and got them in less than 24 hours.
