Silkie thread!

Thanks peep, that is: if my friend handles the eggs carefully when bringing them, lets say in her bag, there would be no reason for them to get spoiled by the long trip? this makes me feel really hopeful. Im going to keep an eye on her to be prepared for the day she travels, by the way would you be willing to send her a dozen eggs when the moment comes if I told you on time?
If she is hand carrying them they should do great!
I finally have a few silkies!
I ordered some eggs from catdance, and now I have three little silkies that are a month old.
Two black, and one porcelain!
They are starting to fluff up a bit now, just waiting on some on the heads.
How long generally until they can be sexed?
Thanks,
Jim
Cute chick! I can sex some of mine at 8 weeks and others not until 5 months. It depends a lot on individual chicks. Males tend to make themselves know fairly early with comb growth but others won't grow comb for months. Some females grow a little more comb than usual and you think they are boys. :D

Yikes just had a huge scare! I just got home and checked on little "eggbert"

and my good thermometer was dead and the crappy one said 104! I don't know if it really was 104 it is dumb and goes higher than the temp really is or sometimes lower. The humidity had dropped to 16% too! So I quickly cooled it down and moistened the sponges and then candled little eggbert to see if it was all right. Luckily there is still movement and she is alive and kickin! But I was like "NOOOOOOOOOOOO!"

Oh, no! Hope it's okay....

I just candled all 21 of the eggs in my incubator, and they all look clear :barnie
Which probably means the eggs I set under my broody are probably infertile too :barnie :barnie
I decided to give everyone a fanny trim, and when I got to my rooster the answer was pretty obvious. His feathers were a mess, obviously he wasn't "hitting the mark".
I just want to hatch some eggs dang it :/
I guess I'll give the eggs I started a few more days just be sure, and start collecting some more after I do whatever with them. That should give my rooster enough time to fertilize the eggs I would think.

It seems okay. I fixed my good thermometer and it says 99.7 now, and the crappy one says 102, so couldn't have been that high. But My **** humidity won't stay up! I have to refresh the sponges every couple hours. And I have an egg turner in there so I can't put a bowl in there.
Do you just have the 1 egg in there? If so I would remove the egg turner and put the bowl of water in and hand turn the one egg 3 to 5 times a day.

Ok, so I am having a terrible time trying to find some SQ Partridge Silkies. I ordered a quad from a reputable breeder. However, 2 of the 4 have slipped wings. The other two are questionable. If anyone has any nice quality Partridge for sale, either chicks or started birds, please let me know :) Thanks so much!!

Problem is i'm gone all day. I couldn't turn it that much

and I have so much going on I would hate to forget!

Take out most of the trays that the eggs sit in and then your bowl of water will fit and you'll still have the turner. If you let the chick hatch in there though, you'll need to devise a way to keep it from getting in the water and drowning... invariably, it will find it. Maybe a mesh onion bag around the bowl and tied with a rubber band or bag tie?

A beautiful sunny Spring day so I led the white Silkie flock out to the wild garden to forage. They seemed to really enjoy it. I know I did. Pulled up a chair this afternoon with a glass of wine and just sat in the sun and watched them.
