Silkie thread!

Another point of interest- I'd love to hear what color eggs your girls are laying! My friend has a black show quality girl that usually lays dark brown (like maran dark brown) eggs. Anyone else? Her's came from Glen See, so they are not mixed.

Mine only laid the cream colored egg; they were buffs.

My light colored girls lay a lighter egg - not a bright white but a light cream. The darker girls lay a darker egg - almost a light brown. All those below with the exception of the blue eggs are silkie eggs. This was before my darkest girls were laying and the camera flash has washed them out some, but you can see color variances.

A beautiful sunny Spring day so I led the white Silkie flock out to the wild garden to forage. They seemed to really enjoy it. I know I did. Pulled up a chair this afternoon with a glass of wine and just sat in the sun and watched them.

Lovely, just lovely.

Day 2 was not so good. She is more easily distressed when she wants to move around and can't. I got the selenium. She will periodically hold her head up, but now she's more or less laying with her head upside down all the time.

Has anyone used prednisone? I am loathe to kill her immune system, but outside of seeing an improvement soon, I feel like I'm running out of options.

Anyone have a suggested dosage for asprin? I have the low dose and wonder if some pain relief might help.

It just makes me soooo sad to see her like this.

Hi Tik! I was once through the same situation and believe me Im with you
hit.gif
, Im not expert by any mean but when the same happened to one of my boys (about 2 months old) a very very kind and committed man was the one who helped us and thanks him the chick is now a very strong and handsome rooster, this is what he advised me by mail:

The first thing to remember is that a chick with crookneck is probably not getting enough food and water and the other chicks might pick on it (it is natural. They are not being mean).

You should get some "hand rearing formula" for caged birds (food to feed baby parrots and other birds) and an eyedropper. Mix it so it is very watery. If you force feed the chick it will get the liquid in its lungs and die. I hold the chick in one hand and an eye dropper (medicine dropper) in my other hand. I get a drop on the end of the dropper and hold it on the side of the chick's beak near the tip. The chick will eventually (be patient) suck or lick up the drop.

Feed only a little at a time and let the chick rest. You might want so very much that the bird eats you might stress it or over feed it. A bird fed too much liquid might burp some up and breathe it in. Wet lungs are very very bad and the chick is weak.

You can mix chick food with water until you get some of the baby bird food.

Yes use the Prednisolone. I found on the internet that Prednisone and Prednisolone are very similar.

I also found this
If it is a solution of 1mg/1mL then give 0.25mL/lb to 1 mL/lb

Somewhere on the bottle it ought to have a number like XXmg/YYml. If you tell me what it says I will figure out how much you should give.

Here is a good guess about how much to give each day.

I found no the internet that there are 2 usual strengths of this medicine:
1mg/1mL
and

3mg/1mL

Let us guess the chick weighs as much as 1/8 pound (one half stick of butter, 2 ounces). Let us also use the higher dose of 1mL/lb. If you have a syringe with markings in cc that will help because 1 cc = 1 mL. If all you have is an eyedropper, I found that the typical eyedropper has 20 drops in each mL.

After all those numbers, here is an answer

Give the chick 0.125 cc = 0.125 mL or 1 drop per dose. You might give it twice for the first day.

Remember: Do not suddenly stop giving Prednisone or Prednisolone. It will make the symptoms worse. Give a little less each day for 5 days. You can do that by mixing
4 drops of Prednisolone
and
12 drops of water
The first day give 5 drops of the mix
The second day give 4 drops of the mix
...
The fifth day give the last drop of the mix
If the chick weighs more give more.

Notice that he refers to Prednisolone, that s because I couldn t find Prednisone around here, just Prednisolone. When I was looking for the medicines all of the vets at the stores I went warned me that I was going to damage the chicks liver, but I have noticed no vet knows much about poultry here in my country (it was really strange for them I was so worried and trying to save a chick s life).
Go ahead and dont loose faith!!!

Hello, my name is Rae.

I am a silkie-holic. I take time off work to get new birds, then spend over $25/bird at auction...
More than two rows of pens put together... My husband is an enabler, and carpenter, and food shuttle.

On another note, the two birds I got yesterday are just short of amazing! I'll try to get some photos tonight, the only problem I see is a slight toe spacing issue and the roo's comb and wattles are a little too red for me, but they are both very typey and dark for splash. OH I'm in love with them!

I lost the 4 week old Splash chick today. Pretty sure it too a peck to the head from one of the cockerels in the pen next to the chick pen. Its head was right up against the fencing that separates them. Bummer. But I am getting 3 more Blue's this weekend.
What a shame. I'm so sorry.

I want to have some on hand- but I can't find any! Have looked at Walgreens, CVS, Walmart, grocery stores.

We just don't have it in the Chattanooga area that I can find. Maybe, I'll try Babies-Are-Us

Pam

Are you sure you are looking in the correct place? I by mine at Wal Mart - not with all the vitamins and medicines, but in the baby departement.

My husband is an enabler also. Bless his heart!
Well, he is a stay at home husband (He was medically retired from the military, so he does still get a pay check). So he has all the time to build and buy things. It's funny, I give him a shopping list and he has a ball getting everything and more!

These are a few chicks my son brought from Hardin poultry. cute cute cute
Very cute! Have fun!!

Sounds like he really enjoys it!

If you'd like a natural source for aspirin, you can give her blueberries. They are high in natural aspirin as is turmeric but they don't seem to like that stuff to much. Blueberries are easy once you get them to try it. If she is still eating, you can squish some and stir them into her food.

Also, I thought I saw a post where someone was asking for a source for selenium, now I can't find the post. So, I'll share this information anyway:

Natural Food Sources of Selenium
Natural food sources high in selenium include cereals (eg. corn, wheat, and rice), nuts (Brazilian nuts and walnuts), legumes (soybeans), animal products (beef, chicken, egg, cheese), and seafood (tuna). Other selenium rich foods are oats, cod and turkey. Brazilian nuts are among the very rich sources of selenium. In fact, it is advised to exercise caution with consumption of Brazilian nuts, as the selenium intake may reach a toxic level.
