Hi All,
I have to introduce you guys to my new Silkie hen. I have no idea what color she is, but I thought she is so cute and her colors are really unique. Any thoughts on what color she is, or maybe she is a mutt. But I love her anyways

I need name ideas too

She reminds me of coturnix quail egg, all speckled! I like the name Quail, once had a bantam OEG by the same name

My dominant hens do that a lot, but my rooster is very persistent when he's 'in the mood'. He will chase them, at full speed, all around the yard until she gives up or he catches her. If your roosters want her badly enough, they'll catch her

they haven't caught her yet! they're 9 mos old and they've all been together since last sept. none of the eggs have been fertile yet. UGH! I got 1 fertile one finally the other day, but I think it was from the other pullet

If you really want fertile eggs from her, you can 'hold' her for them to mount (if they're comfortable with your presence) to ensure success. I had to do that with my very first silkie pair. The rooster could not grasp the concept that he had to get up on her back after he grabbed hold of her, and she wasn't going to patiently stay crouched that long for him to figure it out. I wasn't getting fertile eggs, so I held the hen still for him to mount one day (took him a while, but the poor guy finally figured it out!). Viola, next few days, fertile eggs appeared.

Here are a few pics! Hatch date was March 20th - so five weeks already! I tried to get the variety of colors...some cooperated...others..not so much

! They are so adorable! I think I would hatch...those fuzzy butts are so delightful and you can bond with them early! Of course it is hard to hold 18... which is what I had hatch! Why not do both? Buy a few part grown and hatch a dozen or so! They are very sweet and inquisitive!

Aww VERY cute!

RustyHen, When you go to Karen's, take a lot of napkins to wipe the drool off your face. And take lots of cash if you want breed/show quality started birds. I had a hard time not going home with more than just the "Special Needs" boy I adopted.
