Silkie thread!

WOW, so that is it?? Hmmm. Now, how do I figure out which carries that gene? should I assume that it is the rooster since I have two roosters and one of the chicks has pigment?

I put a paper towel under the chicks. I usually just use shavings, but I haven't had time to do that yet. Now I'm trying to figure out how to do the foot cast thingies! I'm afraid of hurting the poor guy.

No :( I've cried for that hen, I miss her so much.I'm convinced a hawk took her, I don't think she went broody somewhere. I wanted to show her this fall. I didn't even get any chicks off of her :(. I have two young ones growing up from her sister, however, that are showing signs of looking just like her and are as fond of handling as she was. I have lots and lots of pictures to remember her by, though :)

Hopefully she will come around with a dozen of babies soon!

Thanks! Any suggestions on clippers? Or do dog/cat nail clippers work? Also, a beak file suggestion would be awesome, too!
I use a dremel from the hardware store. I use it on dogs too works great! You need to use the sand paper attachment though.

shavings are a bad idea also, babies need a nice hard surface the first few days, shavings are too soft. a papertowel does work good, but don't use newspaper because that is too slippery.

thanks! So I did the paper towel and then I did the little foot splints. The chick was stuck in the egg, it couldn't get all the way out, my friend said it was out, but part of the shell was stuck on its back. well, she kept opening the incubator all the time and letting the humidity out! So, she had to soak it to get the shell off, but it still has eggshell stuck on it and egg goo etc, one of its eyes is basically shut, so I tried soaking that area a bit to help him. He may not make it, IDK... but I'll do whatever I can. poor thing

I would not splint feet until chick has gained strength before splinting. These things often correct themselves when they are strong enough to walk (24 hours old).

I had a hen that carried it who got it from her father (Sizzle). It wasn't pink skin, but it was very light grey.

If you had a large # hatch - you could mark the eggs from each hen and see which ones produce the light skinned chicks. It could be either the hen or the rooster. Hard to say unless you do some test breeding.

I use my cat nail clippers then file the nails down to a more natural look with an emery board. I also use an emery board for their beak. First time holding their head and trying to figure out how to get it done, was pretty tricky. But once you get the hang of it, it's not so bad.

Some guy backed out on silkies from Jamie, so he is selling me four more (3 hens and a cock). All whites. :D Two of them are dyed, but I'm fine with that. I am not looking to show them this year anyway. I just want to build up my breeding flock. Only have a trio of whites, and a pair of blues so it is slow going!

Here are some of the chicks. They are 2 weeks now. Growing strong!
What are those black&white chicks?

Well, I know that it is either that hen or that rooster... because the other hens doesn't have fertile eggs bc she hates roosters, she runs away screaming. so it is either one of them. I was planning on getting rid of the roo anyways bc he has silver leakage, and he has a very slight twisted beak, and he's too aggressive... but I guess I didn't know if I need to get rid of the hen too. I only have 2 females right now, and she's the only one that's fertile. I'm planning on trying to win a bid on ebay for hatching eggs tonight.

posting these here because I lost these pictures on my computer and they're saved in my photos here, need to download them onto my computer :) this is the rooster that I'm going to get rid of.

They are Polish x Houdan chicks :)

The first picture looks like an entirely different boy from the second.
I'd peg him as the carrier just because of how pink his comb is in the first picture, but not 100% on that for sure.
