Ok one last question! About how long after laying her first egg does it take for a Silkie to realize she's supposed to sit on it? Do you just wait for her to go broody? It must take a couple tries to get it right?

I'm sure it's different for everyone, but my little hatchery silkie started laying at 20 1/2 weeks and went broody at 26 weeks. I actually tried to break her but she was too determined, so I let her sit.



QUESTION: Has anyone noticed if there's a difference in how friendly vs. skittish the hatchery silkies are as opposed to the breeder silkies? Just wondering if that has something to do with it or not, or if it's just the individual bird...

Gladly will get pictures. She probably wasn't happy with me because she hadn't been fed all day. I didn't want her crop being full for judging nor did I want her throwing up on the judge. My Brahmas did very well. My one bird got champ. L.F.

As you can see she won best variety ( only one ) and reserve breed out of three other silkies. The other person didn't show up because they are in Europe for vacation.

My hatchery silkies were much more skittish. They still made me fall in love with the breed.

I have one white silkie "Cloud" and she's not near as friendly as any of my other breeds. She was a perfect angel to me when broody though - not even one peck. She won't let you catch her and boy is she fast! However, if I just sit down, she will hop up on my leg and sometimes allows me to pet her if I move slow. I handled her just as much as all the others... I can't keep some of my big girls and new babies off of me but she's just so flighty.

I did have a bratty silkie roo though, so I've experienced that. He's been re-homed and has recently adopted some baby bantam chicks - fatherhood has calmed him down, LOL. I still have one silkie roo but he is an angel to everyone except my husband. The funny thing is my husband is afraid of him and won't come into the backyard unless I put him away. You can imagine the teasing that goes on around here over that since he's a big guy and not afraid of much.

Interesting - I was just wondering if it was chance with the bird or good/bad genetics... I've never had good breeder silkies to compare to.

It is my understanding there are two whites, a recessive and a dominant. Recessive is what most whites are bred from- and it requires two copies to be white. It will never "become" dominant white. Dominant White (from my research) is what Paint is based on - it does not require two copies and it covers almost completely with one copy - except for leakage. That's why you get black spots, those are "leakage". It is much less common. It is also why if you breed two Paints together for a long time you get white - it covers more and more. It may get rid of other hidden genes that cause the leakage, I am still not sure on why - but it does get whiter and whiter. That's why you have to go back to black to keep the spots.

If your Paint is from a Paint pen, then you will get the Blue Paints and Paints.

huh? not quite understanding what you mean. Silkies will just be tagged as silkies here in the US because there are no large fowl. Unless a few people have imported them. But stores like that only sell hatchery chicks, so they will not look like regular fluffy silkies most of the time.

In one tank they have silkies and in a different tank it says bantam silkies

My first thought was ....that's why you don't buy chickens at a gas station. Here wilco is a gas station but it sounds like a feed store from the other posts.

They must be confused. lol In US, all silkies are bantams.
