Silkie thread!

I used to put pine shavings in the bottom of the tubs where I had young chicks. One time I had a chick die and I did an autopsy on it. Couldn't really find anything wrong with it but I do know that when I opened its crop it was full of little tiny pieces of those chips. Then I started watching as my other chicks were pecking around and noticed they were picking up and eating it too. I was shocked to see that little crop with so much of it in there and the others eating it, I immediately took the pine out. I still put it in my older chicks houses, but they are out a lot and don't seem to eat it..

Minkie and Jaz were ones that always would go in and out. Loved that. Even when I wanted them to go in early I would just call them ( and have a little scratch) and they would come running to the coop unlike some of the others

I have a couple girls and one of the young boys that will stand at the door and pace back and forth all day if I dont lift them out the door. Silly things! On one side of the coop it sits closer to the ground ( it sits in a little bit if a hill) Once i get the inside of the coop rearranged I think I might just put a door out that way for them . Icee never figured it out lol!

silly birdies. I am glad you didn't spoil Jaz and Minkie! They are such sweet birds. Jaz is looking great - he still has some of his pinfeathers but he really looks like a tank now - amazing fluff on these guys. They also love their fermented feed and I put two girls with them in their side - and now EVERYBODY is sitting on the eggs! I tell you - broody Silkies are contagious!

I cant wait to get to a point of using broodys to hatch. I may need a few pointers on how to set them up to do that.

Adorable!

I think my chicks are getting lazy. I caught them piggy back riding on the hens.

Thanks, and Yeah, I'm hoping for a real snazzy splash pullet.... maybe you can make one for me :)
I wouldn't worry about Marbles so much. When her crest grows in, just keep an eye on her. If it looks like she can't seem to get in the coop because she can't see, build them a ramp so she can just walk up. Make sure it's a wide one. I hear some silkies have a hard time figuring out the ramps if they're narrow, because they can't see well. My silkies have never had a ramp so I have no personal experience with this. Just what I've read.

Hopefully Marbles just got smart and decided she didn't want to get squished in the nesting box and that's why she's sitting up on the perch. You plan on getting more silkies anyway, right? So I wouldn't worry about her being left alone on the floor. Silkies like to pile up together.

For the sand. I guess I could take a trip to the CT river. And I have a strong person right in my own house, my boyfriend. He does tree work. But getting him to do anything extra, most of the time, is like pulling hair. He's sooo dramatic!

I'm still going to look here on the farm to see what we have. I've only been trying to make it out back since last night but I just can't seem to make it that far.

I think I'll run out there after lunch before anyone catches me for something else.

Love those broodies and their babies!

I DON'T love them when they're going broody when they're not supposed to....which is most of the time around here.

Yeah, I'd really like to put some sand in one of my pens. My plan was to start with the Cochins and then the Silkies. Cochins live on a dirt patch, the Silkies have some old woodchips that were dumped on the dirt. Not sure who came up with the wood chip idea.
hu.gif
I don't think it was the best idea. lol Only good thing about the chips is that it doesn't get very muddy

That's it!!! I'm going out back to see what kind of dirt piles we have back there! Then I'll just have to lug wheelbarrows on my day off.

Actually Mikie was the last to join the "Broody Gang" First it was one I had moved to break her - once she moved back she went back - then it was her mom - and now Minkie thinks it looks like fun too! Its really funny to see all three of them squished in the milk carton I use for a nest - but they all do it!

Oh - I meant to ask - did you ever have any black chicks from Jaz/Minkie? I am confused here because I didn't think Black could hide under Partridge - but I have two Partridge chicks and 3 Black chicks from Minkie's eggs. I only had one other girl in with her - and those eggs were brown and I ate them. So these are Minkie's eggs and Jaz is the father.

The chicks:

Unless. I have a gremlin who likes to switch eggs around - I did get that one white chick from the Partridge eggs

I guess I am supposed to have more colors than just Partridge - now I have white, buff, partridge, blue and black...

Here are the chicks from broody Tina. She's doing a great job taking care of them :love
Tina is the self blue cream/porcelain hen in my avatar. Dad is a very smutty buff.

This ones my favorite, the only chick to hatch with a vaulted skull.

This ones blue? This picture washes it out a little, the pic below with all 3 of them together shows its color much better (its VERY blue, with yellow around its eyes).

This one would not hold still, booger!

All 3 of my cuties! Interesting colors, I think!

Lavender is a completely different gene - it is recessive and only shows up with two copies. Not the same as Blue, and a chicken can carry both. I am not sure which one is dominant over the other..

Its like the difference between a Paint bird and a White bird.

This confusion is why I don't like the term "Self-Blue" - but it has been used with the OEG for years so we got stuck with it.
