Silkie thread!

I hope someone here can help me. I have my first pair of silkies they are about 4 months old. The other day I went to open the coop and when my little rooster came out I noticed his head feathers " just didn't look right" after a couple more days he really has begun to look bad. I have tried to get a picture of him but can not get a clear picture so I will do my best to describe it. His head feathers look almost like those long stickers you get on your clothes when walking in tall weeds. It looks like the Fluffy has been pulled right out of the top of his head and left him with all these short tubular spikes on top. I hope someone out there is reading this saying Yes I know exactly what she means.

Question, when candling a egg if its solid black no air pocket to be seen is it rotten? Looks like another one hatch last night! Don't know color yet all tucked in under hen.

Try the float test. This works. The water must be the same temperature as the bator temp or hen. If there is a live chick, you will see movement in the floating egg.

Yes, he is fine.

As AFChick said, he is getting his new crest feathers in. I call this stage "up in rollers". Those tubular spikes are the sheaths that protect the feather when it is growing. They will fall off or be groomed off and allow the feathers to emerge - all nice and fluffy. Chickens go through a molt at least once a year where they loose all their feathers and re-grow them, Silkies are no different. It does look like a feather pillow exploded in the coop when they go through a molt though - so be prepared for that too. They will need higher protein food during this time to re-grow their feathers.

I picked this chick up today, I'm still not sure how I feel about it yet :p
It had been free ranging and was pretty muddy, so I cleaned it up as best I could for a couple of quick pictures. Its supposed to be black, which I've had a REALLY hard time finding. I'd also be tickled pink if it ended up being a boy, but its looking girly so far. To me at least. They also had a GORGEOUS non-bearded pullet for sale, but I don't have NB so I couldn't justify bringing her home :(
