Silkie thread!

X2! When it rains my SQ hen's crest feathers don't cover her eyes and she EATS! While my other silkie hen that I trimmed up ways a ton! LOL!
My hens (and rooster!) are doing the same now, only their sudden vision is caused by peaches! I let them out to freerange almost daily, and our trees are dropping ripe fruit by the bucketful, and of course the prettiest, biggest crested girls seem to eat their way through the messiest, squishiest peaches and get the goo all in their crest and beard and slicks it back. Which lets them see much better and find more peaches, and in turn get even messier. I see lots of baths in the future

Thank you!! I'll have to stock up on lil bandaids!! Any idea what causes bent toes in the first place?
Each chick I've had come out of the incubator with curled toes was the last hatched chick. Stayed in the shell longest. I've never had first to hatch chicks come out curled.

It is amazing to me how fast my chicks have adapted to the bandaid boot and if I get it on within twenty four hours, the foot is straightened in two days. That's the longest I've left them on. I had two chicks with curled toes out of my old LG incubator in the past year out of forty five hatched. None curled hatched out of my new Genesis 1588. None by broody.

Yes, he is fine.

As AFChick said, he is getting his new crest feathers in. I call this stage "up in rollers". Those tubular spikes are the sheaths that protect the feather when it is growing. They will fall off or be groomed off and allow the feathers to emerge - all nice and fluffy. Chickens go through a molt at least once a year where they loose all their feathers and re-grow them, Silkies are no different. It does look like a feather pillow exploded in the coop when they go through a molt though - so be prepared for that too. They will need higher protein food during this time to re-grow their feathers.
Thank you I was not sure they would molt at such a young age, this being their first year. At just around 4 months I just moved them to 16% layer along with my large birds. Should I take them back to 18% starter? Or is there a specific supplement I should give them? I offer scratch, bread, greens and other veggies and fruits. And they are allowed to free range when I can be outside with them since I live in an area where I have seen bald eagles flying over and many hawks checking things out.

I posted photo's of my Silkies a few weeks back, and these are the 2 that had question marks on their sex's. I'm sure they are both Roos, but wanted to know for sure before they go to their new homes since I can't keep Roosters where I currently live. They are bearded, so I believe they don't get wattles, I did spread out their feathers on over their comb as much as possible. They are 13 weeks old. Thanks everyone for helping me sex my cute fuzzy's.

#1~This one used to be all blue, but just starting getting the copper feathers in about 10 days ago.

#2~What color is this one?
