Silkie thread!

Does anyone have any splash pullets? Doesn't have to be SQ, but I do want the big, round, puff ball silkie! Please PM, cause this thread move too fast to keep track. LOL

This is elvis the rooster

In her origonal post, I think she posted a link to her blog demonstrating what she does. Very interesting. But I think she does use Wood stove pellets.

Thank you Blimpit007 I was able to find the link.

Adding to my silkie flock. I got my first pair of silkies in April this year as day old chicks. No eggs but it does look like it's a hen and a rooster. I also went and picked up 2 blue chicks that are about 2 and 4 weeks old. As we have ventured out of the brooder I have set them down next to the pair while free ranging. The hen seems ok with them almost a little scared of them. The rooster will peck at them tho. I am always right there and will push him away when he does this.
Am I doing the right thing? Will I be able to put all 4 babies in the same coop?

Not sure about the specific wood pellets discussed but I have picked up some around here that look like wood pellets. They are compressed wood shavings. I can't recall the name but they look like round compressed pine shavings. when they get wet they break down into a course powder type substance.

when i start to integrate chicks i put them outside in a playpen i either use a dog crate or xpen. they can see each other that way. then there doesn't seem to be any issues when i finally put everyone together. there is the usual peck if they get in the way of a big but not much overall beating up! ;)

Here's another pic

He is very pretty, but I don't think he is Lavender. Lavender is supposed to be all over the same even light gray color. He has dark hackles - maybe red? on the wings and a white chest. That sort of looks like Silver Partridge to me?

I don't have Lavender in Silkies, but I do have it in Ameraucanas. They are a very even color - all over.

If he came out of a Lavender breeding pen, maybe he is "split" for lavender and only carries one gene. He wouldn't show the color with only one - you need two to have Lavender. Lavenders can be bred to Black to produce splits which can then be bred together to get Lavenders.

Oh, and the color that was accepted in Silkies is not called Lavender - its called "Self Blue" even though the gene that makes it is called Lavender.. Just FYI.
