Silkie thread!

Welcome to the Wonderful World of Silkies! I just got my first one last year. I now have.. um.. I will have to take my shoes off I think

Yup, I have 11...

I love mine. Most docile birds I have found, if you handle them a lot I think they actually LIKE it!

Of course you know.. now you are going to have to post pictures for us all to drool over!
I remembered pics after I posted so I did an edit and added pics :) I am looking forward to when Zoey starts to lay so I can start incubating some to add to my flock.

I for the first time got silkies this year. They are between 7-8 months old, what age do they start laying eggs? I really want to hatch some next year.

I think you are close.. keep an eye on their combs - they get bigger just before they start to lay. Hopefully they start before winter sets in, if they do they will lay most of the winter for you too... but they only do that the first year.

I wondering about Pinto here. She's kind of a weird silkie. First of all, she has no tail. It has just never grown in. Are there rumpless silkies? Second, she poops down the back of her left leg. I have to clean her up or it just accumulates there. I end up sometimes removing feathers as well. I thought I was keeping her tail from growing, but she doesn't grow any long tail feathers in the areas I don't have to clean. Will she ever learn to poop right? If she's truly female, I'm going to find gross eggs in the nest boxes. Third, she's tiny, doesn't seem to grow much. She's about four months old now and is slightly smaller than the three month olds. She seems healthy, though -- eats like a pig, acts like every other chicken in the coop, is pretty fast on her feet. She jumped up high enough to steal a good sized part of my eight-year-old daughter's sandwich out of her hand, then I spent quite a while chasing her around to clean out her beak because she bit off more than she could swallow and the bread glued her mouth shut. Could she just be a slow grower?

This picture is about two months old, but she's pretty wild, so getting side shots of her is not easy. Considering she's pretty disgusting, she's mostly handled to bathe her back end. I try giving her treats after she gets a bath, but so far she's not going to be swayed by that.

Sounds like she has a deformity. Can you get a picture of her bum and where her vent is located? If she does have a deformity, hopefully she is NOT a female because she most likely could have trouble trying to lay eggs.

Bathe her with a flea/tick shampoo. The poop sticking to her feathers could be due to lice eggs. After she is clean and dry, dust her bottom with talcum powder. That will also help prevent sticking. Add probiotics and grains such as wheat, rice and oats to her diet, and acv to her water. This will firm up her poop. Her ttail will likely grow as she gets older. She is still a baby at 4 months. I would guess that she is from slow maturing line.
