Silkie thread!

Food - you will want to feed them Flock Raiser their entire lives, with calcium free choice. They do better on this because they don't lay as many eggs (they are great layers until they go broody though) and the boys will not want any calcium.

If you plan on showing them you will want to make sure they don't break their foot feathers outside having fun. Some people keep their show birds inside on unscented unclumping kitty litter.

Sorry - no way to sex them at 2 weeks - or even at 2 months - probably closer to 6 months we can guess.

No in the house on kitty litter for mine, but I will watch those feathers! As for food-will I need to give them some other source of Calcium? I guess its a good thing I asked about food because right now I have them on medicated starter feed.

Jazz is becoming quite the manly chicken. I wonder if his beard is even going to cover those wattles.

Here he is at three or four weeks old, if I remember rightly:

Around two months:

Three months old:

I just took this today. He's exactly four months old:

Big old earlobes on this guy. He has some iridescent green feathers in his tail and wings, too. I think he's going to be a pretty rooster when he's finally done growing, except maybe that giant comb (no other silkie rooster I own has a comb near that size -- they're around Jazz's two month size). It makes him look like his brain is leaking out his forehead.

It's hard to get a good shot of him because he runs from the camera. Here's the best, and Cheddar had to photo bomb it.

Oops! It helps to actually add all the pictures ....

To cute! I love how they're looking at her like " you look a little different" and she's looking at them adoringly like "yep I'm the Moma" so funny. Get pic!

Great pics, I'm trying to guess what mine are at seven weeks and its tuff! I have someone buying four of them today, and I want to keep a few I hope I don't sell all my girls. Really don't have the room to keep them all for six plus months. Plus I would be stuck with to many boys. Everybody want girls.

Hi, can anyone tell me how old silkies are when they start laying? I have 4 silkie hens... Definately girls. The oldest is now 11 months old, the other 3 are 9 months old and we still haven't had any eggs. Its getting to winter here now so should I just assume I'm not getting any eggs until next spring now? I've had all these since they were 5weeks old so the eggs are a long time coming. X

I have a quick question which may or may not have been asked before. I'm getting 20 chicks shipped to me next week and I have 3 20 week old silkies who are extremely docile. I was wondering if I can put the babies in there with the silkies. Will they want to be moms to these new babies? My silkies were too docile to move to the laying pen with the big girls and roosters so I kept them in the baby pen. Two of the silkies are girls and one is a rooster. Do I have any chance of letting the babies stay with the silkies or will something horrible happen? All 3 are so docile... what do you think?

We had our fall carolina chickenstock today, and I came home with quite a few scores, everything from quail to silkies to polish to easter eggers to a pair of Thai gamefowl. Pictures aren't so great, I snapped them in their quarantine hutch. This particular cockerel caught my eye and I instantly fell in love. He's around 5 months, according to the seller (a very sweet lady with beautiful birds). I've been searching for a large-crested cockerel for quite a while, and now my wish is granted. Already excited to watch this guy fully mature and see what he produces. He's a total sweetheart, and has adopted the tiny showgirl chick I also purchased. Here is the showgirl chick. I don't plan on breeding from it, but I've always wanted one to grace my flock, and here he/she is! I find adorably ugly.
here are my three silkie chicks hatched and raised form my own flock. their not the best pics, but can you all please critique them. this first one I believe is a roo. im pretty sure this is the pullet out of the three. and this is my favorite out of the three, pretty sure he is a roo also. thanks!
My first of 2 partridges of any kind :)
All so beautiful! Especially the Partridges. I think it's my favorite Silkie color.
