Silkie thread!

I am SO mad!!! I just caught my rooster with one of my chicks in his beak!!! he was flinging it around like a dead mouse! :(

he is REALLy violent first thing in the morning when I let them out. he goes into hormonal rage or something and then after 30 min he calms down. he attacks everyone. but for the rest of the day he is fine.

what do I do?? should I get rid of him??

He's not violent, he is Randy...

Morning is like that here as well, but seems to be worse when they have less day light hours. We have 12 hours of darkness now. Maybe too much testosterone pent up?

How old is he?

I bet he was trying to mate it.. happens.. :( Sorry for your loss

I think the chick followed mom into the run, mom got charged so she ran back in the coop, but the chick wasn't fast enough. :(

they pretty much all know not to go out into the run until he calms down. but, I guess sometimes mess ups happen. I just don't know what to do. I seem to be having a hard time in the rooster dept! he is about 6 months old or 7

I've got a couple of frazzled Cochins and am worried about the cold. I live in south central Texas. How do I monitor them? By weighing?

Have you noticed any skin problems with the frazzle?

Is the frazzle a Sizzle as well?

My frazzle did fine during the winter. She would sleep in the middle spot in between the Silkies and keep warm.

I'd imagine we have worse winters here in Va

She's a frazzled cochin =) I do notice her skin is pretty dry, I gave her an oatmeal bath. She is butt naked so she lives inside with a diaper. I'm hoping her feathers grow back in well but they keep falling out even when she is just walking =P Our winters here are really bad so I don't dare to put her outside, also because the others pick on her too badly. I don't mind having her as a companion though ;) she LOVES to snuggle.

He is horny.. That is the most horny age for roosters IMO.

Is he getting any action? If he mates a couple times in the AM he should calm down. How many girls does he have to choose from? Are any allowing him to mate?

he is SO horny. sorry for the two posts so quick. bah!

the chick is still alive, thankfully.

nope. nobody is letting him mate. the girl who he LOVES, has a paralized leg, so she stays laying in the coop all day. his other hen is taking care of chicks, so he can't mate her. and the others are not old enough to mate yet. :( he is a MESSS! anything I can do about that?

It's really not his fault. He needs to relieve some of that pent up testosterone. Can you get him a couple girls? They don't have to be silkies..

Advice needed!!!!
The first one hatched today and the girls started to attack it. Does that happen a lot? I thought silkies wouldn't do that because they are known for being such great moms. I don't know if they just got scared when it jump out of the egg so fast or what. It is inside with me now under a heat lamp. What else do I need to do? Do you think I can try to reintroduce it to the girls? And if not what kind of water container is best so it doesn't drown ?
Any advice would be so appreciated !!!
I am so sad I was hoping this was going to go better

You mean the non-broody hens? That is VERY TYPICAL. If they were not broody (and sometimes even if they were), they are far more likely to attack a chick than to mother it. There are exceptions, and a hen experienced at playing mama is more likely to take to chicks, but not when the whole flock is involved.

Quote: I would not count on that. When birds brood together, the results are often poor. They really do not need a lot of space when they are brooding and raising chicks--especially for the first couple of weeks after hatching. One box per hen with eggs at a similar rate of development is about all the space they need right now. Or kick all the hens but the one who has been brooding longest out of the nest and separate it off s that they cannot get back in.
