The Smutty Buffs will probably clean themselves off of the sticky, it may take some time. Don't be afraid of bathing them, just make sure they do not put their heads down in the water and keep water out of their mouths, they will be fine. What I see is they look young and gangly - not lower and older. Did the previous owner also trim their crests? The Whites look fluffier in both body and crests than the Buffs do.

You can use the Buffs to incubate eggs, and you can hatch out their chicks but they will not be able to be shown - unless you get some without any of that black. I believe judges will allow for a little bit of "smut" in the tail of boy Buffs, but yours appear to have the dark wings also - which is frowned upon. Buffs (I have been told) are hard to keep correct, and if mixed will loose their all over Buff color and start showing darker/lighter areas. Buff is supposed to be all one even color.

I have a Buff I am using to work on Partridge - the first generation cross had one Dark Buff girl (no smut), one Blue Smut boy (beautiful but not correct for Buff) and one Smutty Buff Girl. I will breed the Smutty Buff girl back to her Partridge dad.

Hello and Welcome to the Silkie Thread and Welcome to the Wonderful world of Silkies!

Smutty Buff Silkies have black feathers in their tails and wings.  Splash is white and black/gray - so no - its not a Splash, wrong genetics.  I find it unusual that two girls are growing black tail feathers though - that usually happens on the boys..  Were the Buff hens laying?

Yes, warm up the coffee and go get us some pictures, we LOVE pictures of Sillies!

My buff hens have black feathers too!!

Baby pictures !!!!

Very Cute!

See that dark smudge on their backs? That shows the smut - if you look at the earlier pictures of the other person's Buff chicks they have no darkness on their backs or bodies. Your birds would be called Smutty Buff too - but it doesn't make them any less an adorable Silkie - just not a "Show" Silkie. They are very useful in breeding Partridges.. and we all know I am a Parti girl...

One of my silkie chicks follows me. One isn't too scared of me and the other two don't like me lol.
I guess they aren't all too scared of me. I can sit them all in my lap and they will lay there.
I hope I have hens or one be a rooster. I already have a pair of silkies. I could always split the coop in half. It be nice if they all got along with my year old pair. But I doubt that as the reason I got the rooster was fighting with the other..lol

I think ichabod my rooster is not fertile. That's why I'm hoping I have a too from these four.

Well I am down to one partridge baby. The littlest one didn't make it. I don't think he developed right. Sad. I have decided that since partidges look like a sunrise, I would name my little partridge Henley. Since the Eagles sang tequila sunrise. It's hard to name chicks sometimes. I just love the markings on it's head!
