Silkie thread!

Usually when they say F3 that means the third generation bred back to get correct genetics. I believe she is a Sizzle and not a Silkie. She has smooth feathers, so somewhere in her breeding she lost one silkied feather gene (perhaps on purpose) while gaining that frizzle gene - its hiding under there but she isn't a "Silkie" as long as those feathers aren't Silkied... Your darker one looks like a Frizzled Silkie (got two Silkied genes) so she can be called a Silkie again as long as everything else is correct.

I have a Sizzle too - goofy bird! They started out as a cross between a Frizzled Cochin (or other bantam who was Frizzled, I heard some used Polish) and then crossed back to Silkies again to get the toes, skin, ears, combs, etc. correct again.

Just had 5 hatch, 3 more eggs still to go (hopefully)! Actually 3 of them look like silkies, but I will have to wait until they are a couple weeks to see what feathering they inherited. They are crossed from a partridge frizzled sizzle to a black silkie.

You can buy them from a breeder, but to start your own project you have to breed a frizzled cochin to a silkie and breed those together or back to silkies. But you don't want to breed two frizzled birds together, only a frizzled to a non-frizzled. Two frizzled birds create a double frizzled, bald bird with brittle and painful feathers. I have one, she's a pittiful little thing who needs a sweater to live outside right now.

It would be easier to get Sizzle eggs or birds - making your own is a 3 or 4 generation project. The important bird missing is the one this thread is named for... Silkie

Pie/Pi
Cappuccino
Frappucino
Latte
Barista

I have 5 baby chicks hatching here in the next 1-2.5 weeks and I need help deciding on names..... I have a couple picked out from stuff, but i need some for the rest. Here is what I have come up with for either sex:
Pie/Pi
Cappuccino
Frappucino
Latte
Barista

Don't count your chickens before they hatch

You should wait until AFTER they hatch to name them. They don't always all hatch.

All I can tell you is my (bird) came out of a closed coop that had only silkies in it and one (bird) that looks just like it. Those (birds) came out of a closed pen of Silkies with no Frizzle, Sizzle, or Frazzle. Neither owner has Cochin or any other curly feathered birds. Mine does have flat feathers, but all other Silkie traits, blue ears, five toes and black skin. What ever this gene is or where ever it came form it is dominate. Almost all eggs hatched out from its mother look like mine.

Bantygirl I would be more than happy to send you some eggs when and if she ever stars laying, but the only problem is I do not have a Silkie Roo. I'm sure my friend would do the same. I don't know where you are located. She was talking about incubating some eggs. I really want some blues and splash and have been thinking about ordering some eggs to hatch my self. Both of us view our birds as pets. Right now I plan on putting my girl and the rest of those in the family pic in with my White Crested Blue Polish just to see what comes out. I did hatch one other out, but gave it away because I didn't want to take a chance on getting any in the future with the brittle feathers, Now I think I need to add some of those pretty little show girls or necked necks.

DeCaf or DeeDee for short. Caffeine or Caffy if it's a girl.
