Silkie thread!

What do you mean, "a couple of mine have this"? What breeds/type of feathers of yours have this? All mine that had a frizzle gene had it--three frazzles (double copy frizzle) and one frizzle had it. Of yours that have this, are they all carrying a frizzle gene or two?

Thanks. You are the first person I've "talked" to who has seen this before.
Jack frost my black silkie has it, and Ruby has it, and two on my sizzles had it on their legs right where the one in the picture does. I've put stuff on it thinking it was sore and used oatmeal shampoo and treated for bugs and this and that and nothing really changes it so I just attributed it to their skin color =/ Doesn't seem to bother anyone.

I agree, it doesn't seem to bother them at all, but there has to be "something" wrong. I got immediate improvement when i bathed them in Adams flea and tick shampoo, but I don't think it is parasites. I wonder if it is just some sort of generalized chronic infection. Did you use any that have this skin condition for breeding? Did they pass it on? Maybe it is an autoimmune issue.

My rooster is the father of all my sizzle and silkie babies, but they are all very young and I haven't noticed any redness as of yet.

Here is a smooth version of a sizzle. I'm going to be breeding her bake to a frizzled sizzles.

That's good to know. I noticed this skin thing when these were quite young. I'm tempted to get a really good quality Cochin hen to breed to the frazzle to get 100% frizzles but I am unsure if I am not just passing along some sort of genetic/autoimmune issue.

I highly doubt it. I am sure a lot of people's chickens have it, they just don't inspect them as much as we do

Here's a link I found fascinating when I first learned about these neat Silkie-related birds: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/664348/the-sizzle-thread

If you haven't already, please post this information about the skin condition over there for other Sizzle/Frazzle owners, I am sure somebody else noticed problems but just didn't think to ask..

I have one silly Sizzle and I haven't noticed any problems with her skin, but she is the most skittish in the Silkie pen so I don't get to study her very closely. I do have one guess - and its only a guess - sunburn? Perhaps the dilution of the black skin gene that came from the cross made their now very exposed skin more sensitive to solar radiation? You mention it is in the exposed areas the most - although their feet look covered perhaps that is different than the red on the rest of their body. Since the feathers don't protect from sun - or wind - it could be any of those things...
