Silkie thread!

So sorry, seems like the day for it. My little wylkie died last night.

Sorry to hear one of yours died, too.

I have hatched several silkies. Some larger than others but I have one that has not grown since it was a few weeks old. Less than half the size of the others that hatched at the same time. Does anyone else have a tiny silkie? Will it eventually catch up? It's 12 weeks and about 4 inches tall. It's feathers are growing in nicely and no deformities. He does have a bit of a mohawk. So cute.

Hello! I have had my 4 silkies for about a year now, I have 3boys and 1girl. I just recently got laying hens and have seperated my one female silkie from her boys because they were constantly beating her up. I have started to feed my laying hens some laying pellets and oyster shells to promote laying. My silkie is also eating this but she hasn't ever laid an egg for me even when she was with her boys.
Can anyone tell me why this is?
And if she dose lay what will her egg look like?
My laying hens are throwing brown eggs that are a normal size, my silkie is black so I'm expecting a black egg?? I honestly have no clue! Lol thank you:)

Haha... Black egg? Defiantly not... That would be cool though. All silkies will lay same size most of time and color. Some white to a brown.

show old is she? If under a year she could need time. If u haven't had the hen long she may need time to adjust. If she is older she may be not laying any longer...in this cold months hey don't lay too well.

Well I got her in April this year as a chick. She has always been very quiet and kind of dose her own thing. I thought that maybe she just was too young but I have had them for a long while now and still nothing. Maybe it's the nesting? She is with my red hens and we converted a old wooden shelf into a divided boxs and that what my others lay in.
Should I try a different feed? I mean she is fairly tiny so maybe she isn't fully matured?

she is in front and my boys are behind her.

This is for all those people who ask: Can Silkies get cold.

Yes - they can, and they do, see?

Gave them some dry stuff - even the 4 day old CHICK is out there.

See? Silkies go out in the snow...
I would not have noticed that little chick in your pictures if you hadn't mentioned it.

When I check my birds at night, the Silkies are HUGE fluffed up balls of fluff. Their coop is pretty open and mostly wind proof on three sides (the many screen windows are covered by a tarp--not 100% windproof in a strong wind). I doubt they warm it up at all at night. They've been fine when the temps went down to 25 the last couple of nights with strong north winds. They are still out foraging and laying eggs at about the same rate. I worry a lot about them in this bitterly cold weather because of the extreme temperature variations coupled with the strong winds. Last week it was in the 80s. Just a week or two ago, we had a 40 degree drop from the high of one day to the high of the next. Forty degrees is a huge difference and it has to be hard on them.

What exactly are you asking? If you are thinking the egg is abnormally small, silkie eggs are normally on the small side since they're bantams

I think my Silkie eggs are pretty big. They regularly lay 35 gram eggs, sometimes up to about 40 grams. My Ameraucanas' largest eggs have been 54 grams.

The Silkie in my avatar was well over a year before she started laying, I wouldn't worry about it.
