Silkie thread!

Hi everyone! I haven't been on in a while so I thought I'd share some pictures

This is Early, my black rooster (obviously

). He's about 10 months old now. What do y'all think of him? He's got a lovely beetle green sheen on his wings, back and cushion. He does have some leakage on the back of his neck, but its so light i cant tell if its silver or gold. I also think his wings are a bit low, but considering I paid $5 for him at a yard sale, I guess I can't complain.

And my favorite hen, Wendy, looking fabulous after her moult. None of my other girls wanted to stand still for pictures (boogers).

Gorgeous - I love the first rooster

Mama silkie with brand new baby Faverolles. She's a great mother and tolerates my constant peeking. Lol I LOVE silkies....fuzzy bundles of love that are the best incubators ever.

My silkie hen wants to be a mama.....when I come down to collect eggs she is sitting on the nest....ALWAYS with 2 eggs under her.....I don't know if I should let her hatch any....we need the eggs for food and when I do take the eggs from her she still sits there then soon enough walks away......whad do you recommend I should do? I don't want to give her eggs then she abandons them!

9 1/2 times out of 10 with silkies. They will be persistent if given the chance to hatch their eggs and make great mommas. If this is her first hatch I recommend letting her have 5 eggs freshly laid. And see how she fairs. If left alone she might surprise you and hatch them! To me 5 sacrificed eggs to a truly dedicated silkie is never a waste. She wants to raise a family as much as you and me. No to mention new chickens. So possibly more hens for eggs! I say go for it let her try!

well......I may end up giving her some eggs.....but I don't relly need 5 more chicks....I hatched 12 on new years, and have a flock of 5....

could I give her 2 or 3? maybe throw in some golf balls?

could I leave her in with the other chickens so the babies could get used to her other flock members? my last hatch was with astralorps (as mamas) and the were all so mean to the babies and so we took them away. could I leave her in the coop with the babies/eggs?

also, I would be using my eggs....meaning the eggs will be related to the father....if the babies that hatched were hens would it be safe to use her for eggs as well? or would you not if she could mate with her daddy? do you just recommend buying a few more eggs from my breeder?

Few pictures of my little silkie flock:
That buff silkie rooster is my favorite rooster. You can also see some white chicks on the left and 2 blue and 1 buff chicks on the right. You can also see the pigeons in the background:

The silkies hanging out with our RIR Redina, our only standard sized chicken:

Last silkie chick that I hatched last year. She turned out to be a splash and she is the best hen in my entire flock. HUGE vaulted skull and crest. I'll have to go take a recent picture of her. I'm DEFINITELY going to hatch some eggs from her when spring comes around:

Some silkie chicks from about 2 years ago. My flock produces many different colors:

I absolutely love silkies! Favorite breed by far.
