Silkie thread!

flocknfoal It's really not torture to a chick(en) to get bathed. You could dampen her with a little warm water where she is sticky and work some shampoo(diluted) into the area and work it well into the shellacked feathers. Leave it on a few minutes (you could wrap her in a towel). Then put her in the sink and rinse her in warm water well till the soap is all out. Wrap her back into a dry towel or better yet use a human hair dryer on low. Do not put her back with the others till she is completely dry.

A lot of birds actually enjoy a bath in warm water and sometimes start to fall asleep. They also like the warm air blowing through their feathers. This should de-shellac her. If not you may have to repeat - not the same day. Sounds like she was partially shrink wrapped. I think she would feel better having it cleaned off - having it plastered is probably irritating .

Thanks for the advice. When I tried to wash the poor little thing before she just chirped and chirped like I was torturing her. I figured she was cold, and wanted to be back with her chick buddies, but what you said makes sense. I'll try again tomorrow and let you know how it goes.

So, I gave her a bath in warm water with a little baby shampoo and used a very small (travel) blow dryer on low with a diffuser and my hand around the chick to make sure it didn't get too warm. I was extremely gentle and carful, but the chick is doing much worse now than before. It was running around before and doing great, but now it's having trouble keeping it's balance and keeps falling over when it tries to walk. In my experience, when a chick starts having trouble with balance like that, it usually dies. :(

Hey guys.. Need some input. I am going to be keeping my chickens inside . At night or when I'm not home. If its still dark out in not risking some critter getting my chickens. I'm searching for a cage. I plan on keeping one or two silkie chicks so it has to house 3-5 chickens comfortably. Again only at night.

I see a nice steel one at petsmart. But idk about its size. Price is great. 99 bucks. Its demensiobs are

41.5"L x 17.5"W x 26"H

how much bigger of a cage should I get

I personally would be worried about them getting sick from the in and out difference in temps.

The chick seems to be doing a little better now. Maybe it was just disoriented? I got most of the guck off of it's back, but it's head is about the same. I don't want to put too much pressure on it's little head, I might give it brain damage. I think I'll just leave it a few days and see how it does. Thanks for the help!

I was too but something cane into my garage where the cage we had was and took one out.. That's why I want them in so I know there safe. Its constantly 67 degrees in house. Its been 45-65 here. The coldness seemed to pass. I just want to know if that size is k
