Happy birthday Chickies!

Cute. I see a few vaulted skulls there.

Oh boy! We'll get more Australian Silkies to admire! Are your Silkies the bantams or the LF Silkies? The USA Silkies I'm accustomed to seeing mostly are the bearded bantams. I'm not a fan of Show Girls or non-bearded but EVERY Silkie is still a sweetie! It's amazing how these birds are so wildly popular! I love these guys and currently have one invalid recuperating in the house - she is getting better every day from her doctor visit.
im not sure wha type she is. i thought there was only one type!, im not a fan of showgirls either. do you have silkies?

Here are our chicks. They will be 2 weeks old on Monday. I think one will be light buff and the other will be blue. Never had a silkie before though so I'm not sure and would be grateful to hear if you think that is correct! And they don't look to be bearded.

how do you take pictures of your chicks, do you use a backdrop or what??

I'm no longer suicidal. Yes, it's runs in my family. My mom and sister have it. There have been 6 suicides in my family. Sorry- I'll take it back to chicken posts. Just had to chime in there. Pam Pittman

Our friend is GAD and Bipolar - it seems to run in one of his parents and a sister who committed suicide. He is extremely sensitive and ranges from paranoid imaginary illnesses to thinking he was going crazy until he joined a group therapy - but his sibling's suicide is still plaguing him with tears and depression but he knows now what to do about it. We tried to introduce him to chickens as he has a large yard and loves animals and gardening but he said he would feel worse if the chickens got carried off by the Bobcats in his hilly area. He has dogs and cats which is therapy enough for all his family for now.

Another friend went off medicine drugs to treat hollistically and drives US crazy. Some days are good but some are scattered and disjointed days. "I never said that!" she'll say when I remind her but my DH will be standing right there and say "I was there when you told us that information." Just a blank stare of disbelieving blue eyes looking matter-of-fact back at us saying "No I didfn't!" Please people, if you have meds TAKE them to save our sanity as well as your own. Your chickens will love you for it too LOL

We have only one Partridge and one Black and both are bearded bantams. The Black was from a breeder and has the fuller bonnet and beard. She weighed in at 2.46 lbs at the vet yesterday - Don't know how much that is in kilo weight? The Partridge is a year older and seems just a bit heavier but they both stand the same.

Fancychooklady from Tasmania has a very large assortment of breeds including Silkies. She says the non-bearded works for her because of her free-range environment. She has a big property that some of us little backyards would LOVE to have but some of us are limited by zones and can't have roos and only a very small number of hens - like only 3, 4, or 5. I would love way more chickens but have to keep my limited allowed number just to make sure there are no city or neighbor complaints.

Enjoy your Silkies!

Have any of you ever made heads or tails from silkie vocalizations? When mine sleep they sometimes make this whistle, not unlike a firecracker whistle makes as it ascends. They purr, growl, etc. None of my other chicken breeds do that. Just curiosity if anyone thinks they know what the sounds mean.

I know my Silkies' begging sounds. I know the happy cluck of them finding a tasty morsel to show it off. I know the egg song before and after laying. But the cooing and gurgling and purring sounds etc in the nestbox are their own language. Our 2 Silkies sleep together in one box generally and we hear all kinds of soft squabbling and mumbling as they settle in. I think after some time we recognize some of their noises but I don't think I'll understand all of them. It's been said that chickens do somewhere between 25-27 vocalizations. I'm happy to know THREE of them - better than none of them LOL
