Hi everyone, this is dot. I think she is a dwarf as she is tiny compared to the others! She is 4 weeks old and is separated from the other chicks. As you can see she had a big scab on her head. It started off as what we thought to be a vaulted skull, she rubbed it on the electric hen that just flattened her feathers. It started to leak fluid after I noticed the others pecking. I separated her 2 weeks ago and with the advice of my vet I bathed it with salt water. Then a huge scab fell off and is been like this since. I am desperately trying to save her, but don't know what to do. Advice from another forum is to cull her. But she is very well in herself and very happy. My vet doesn't know what it is but has prescribed anti biotics that she's been on for almost 2 weeks. I hope someone can help and offer advice other than dispatching.

I can't see any reason for culling. Wait and see what becomes of the scab, she may re grow feathers. Siblings are notorious for opening up wounds so don't even attempt to reintroduce her to the others till she is healed.

Thank you chick rookie. She is an absolute sweetheart, we have already given her a teddy bear which she sometimes lies on. She wasn't interested in a mirror and walked straight past it to me, she has bonded strongly with us.
She eats and drinks as normal and acts just as the others do.

Fancychoocklady there are feathers that are growing through the scab, I think that's why it still weeps. She rubs her head against her blanket all the time too, think it's must be really itchy.

I plan to show mu silkies but the feathers on theor feet are covered in dirt and poo should i wash their feet until i show them (to krep them clean) or should i wait till a few days before?

The more you wash the cleaner they stay. 2 days before a show won't do. You'll never be able to get out all the discoloration and clumps of dirt

These are my girls that I rescued. I think they are silkie/cochin crosses. Am I right? Also would you call the one blue or silver or grey?

Sorry to be a pest but can someone tell me if my rescue girls look like they could be pure? I know they are pet quality but I feel like their pitiful little crests are a sign that they are mixes. It doesn't matter to me other than I would like to be accurate in describing them. I have been looking through tons of pics and the only crests I see like these seem to be on babies. Also what color would you say the grey girl is? Thanks! I was told that she is about 2 and I believe the sizzle is about a year younger.

They are too young to show. You need to start your preparation by teaching them to sit quietly in the palm of your hand, with legs down each side. If the judge cannot hold them in this manner then he cannot assess them . I gave mine a good bath and blow dry a week before , then again the night before the show. Trim and file nails and rub Vaseline into and around the the beak , comb and waddles.

I do the practice showing they will be 4 months and like 6 months at fair. will the foot feathers beokay if i dont wash them right now? when should i start washing them? (Age wise)
