Silkie thread!

It's supposed to be a girl. All of them are supposed to be. I'm gonna be p.o.'d if I ended up with a flock of roo's. Seven is bigger than all the other chicks. Came out of the Bantam assortment bin. The feathers are very frizzled. I think I miss posted pics. The bottom one is Silkie "Fiji". That one has feathers on her foot. Not to sound like a moron, but what other breed could it be perhaps? Thanks SO MUCH! I've been too sad to come back to the forums after a Bob cat got my flock of 15 last year

Hi! I'm not new to chickens, but just now getting back into it, after almost a year with no girls.
I got an assortment at TSC. Two they tell me are Silkies. One I have no doubts, but another one they told me is Silkie, but she doesn't have feathers on her feet.(yet). My question is, do they all have feathered feet?

Her name is Lucky Seven. Is she a Silkie? Thanks. We're so happy to have new (8) babies!

ACTUAILLY silkies can be either clean legged or feathered. at my TSC they have all clean legged, rarely ever any feathered. its ok ;)

those are silkies all right!

PRECIOUS! This is Fiji, the other one they said was a Silkie female.

Do they both look female? Thank y'all so very much. I'm so excited to have new babies. I was on the hubs about a mini goat. He said no. So I asked for baby chicks, he agreed. All came about last week, so I'm late starting this year bc it was kinda spur of the moment. I have all the equipment I needed, so start up was only birds & feed this time

TnMama, they can't tell what sex they are at that age unless they have been DNA tested which the feed stores don't do. They buy in bulk from the hatcheries. They can GUESS, and have a 50/50 chance just like the rest of us!

Silkies are supposed to be a feather leg breed.

Excerpt from the American Standard silkie description:

Legs and Toes: Thighs, short, well furnished with silky fluff;
shanks, short, feathered on outer sides with silky plumage. Toes, five
on each foot, the outer toes feathered.

thanks. Then I have no doubts little Fiji is a Silkie. It will be fun to see what the ones I'm unsure of grow up to become. It took months with my first batch a couple years ago. We had 12 breeds and 15 chickens. this time I know 3 of them are a red cross breed, 2 are white rocks, and then there's the silkies. Still trying to figure out little Taloola. I don't care really what breed Seven is. I got the 3 from the bantam bin b/c they were so dern cute. DH wasn't too happy b/c the plan was 7 heavy layers, I brought home 5 I know are layers, but the other 3, we'll see.

Silkies should always have feathered legs. Any that don't do not meet the standard. While feed stores order from hatcheries, and not meeting the standard is pretty common, it is usually comb type, skin colour and crest that are lacking; while foot feathering may not be anywhere near as good as from a bird from a breeder, it is usually present. I doubt they are silkies if they never have feathered legs.

We got them just to have them, so it's no big deal to us what breed. My youngest loves Seven the most already & he don't care what kind it is. :)

Oh Good Grief... I just counted all the chicks I have and the eggs set to hatch and the total is 47... Anyone in North Georgia want to buy a few Silkie/Sizzle/Frizzle chicks? The coop has 2 Blue Silkie Roos, 2 Splash Hens, 1 White Sizzle Hen, 1 Black Frizzle Silkie Hen.

In these pictures they are in a mixed Bantam coop. They have been separated for 6 weeks in their own coop. I'm in Blue Ridge GA which is on the GA, TN, NC line.
