It's supposed to be a girl. All of them are supposed to be. I'm gonna be p.o.'d if I ended up with a flock of roo's. Seven is bigger than all the other chicks. Came out of the Bantam assortment bin. The feathers are very frizzled. I think I miss posted pics. The bottom one is Silkie "Fiji". That one has feathers on her foot. Not to sound like a moron, but what other breed could it be perhaps? Thanks SO MUCH! I've been too sad to come back to the forums after a Bob cat got my flock of 15 last year

Those d**n Bobcats are vicious. Our friend's neighbor lost his rabbit hutch to a Bobcat who just went trotting down the middle of the street with a large bunny in it's mouth with absolutely no fear! Guess that's why the coop thread is always stressing security, security, security. But even then, we could've lost our birds 3 years ago to a stray German Shepherd that broke down our gate if it wasn't for the quick actions of a good neighbor to chase it off. Needless to say those neighbors get some veggies and eggs from us whenever we have the abundance!

is there anything wrong with a split wing? i was wondering if she had that sizzle/fizzle thing going on.

Split wing is a DQ in showing and probably not something you want to be breeding. The bird itself will simply carry it's wing low, hopefully it will just be a pretty layer. The eggs will taste the same.

thanks. Then I have no doubts little Fiji is a Silkie. It will be fun to see what the ones I'm unsure of grow up to become. It took months with my first batch a couple years ago. We had 12 breeds and 15 chickens. this time I know 3 of them are a red cross breed, 2 are white rocks, and then there's the silkies. Still trying to figure out little Taloola. I don't care really what breed Seven is. I got the 3 from the bantam bin b/c they were so dern cute. DH wasn't too happy b/c the plan was 7 heavy layers, I brought home 5 I know are layers, but the other 3, we'll see.

Bantams are prolific layers when they aren't broody - which is pretty much most of the year for us! Our Silkies rotate laying 3 months on, 3 months off, etc etc. And of course during moult no breed lays. Bantams are cute but a lot of work for the few eggs in return. We got the Silkies originally for pets not realizing how broody and sporadic their egg return was. So we invested in an APA Ameraucana and Buff Leghorn for consistent egg layers. Guess what - now the Leghorn is broody! Will it ever end? The Ameraucana goes from broody to broody trying to choose which broody to deposit her egg with!

Hi! I'm not new to chickens, but just now getting back into it, after almost a year with no girls.
I got an assortment at TSC. Two they tell me are Silkies. One I have no doubts, but another one they told me is Silkie, but she doesn't have feathers on her feet.(yet). My question is, do they all have feathered feet?

Her name is Lucky Seven. Is she a Silkie? Thanks. We're so happy to have new (8) babies!

It is a shame you didn't have 9 chicks. She could be 7 of 9 (star trek)

ACTUAILLY silkies can be either clean legged or feathered. at my TSC they have all clean legged, rarely ever any feathered. its ok

those are silkies all right!

And they are darling, regardless...feathered, or not.

I know these pics are terrible quality. See the one continual row on the top picture...pullet. See the break in feathering and two lengths of feathers?.. cockerel. This is only visible like this when they are a couple to several days old. After that, its a guessing game. Try it. Or, post a picture and I'll tell you.

This is a new one to me - what is a chest infection? A cold? Sniffles? Skin eczema? They are so little!

I went thru this, this winter. I had a hen that her sinus was so swollen her comb didn't look like it was there. I brought her in like I do every sick chicken and started her on duramyacin for 10 days. She improved then she started coughing and wheezing so I took her to the vet. He said she had a bacterial infection in her lungs and the swollen face was just the beginning of it. He gave her s shot of Baytril and some liquid I had to give her everyday for 10 days and it cleared up just fine. The antibiotics that we have access to at the farm stores won't do any good for a bacterial infection. At least around here anyway.

That sounds exactly like what my Lily had. She just got off her 3rd round of Tylan. The first two I only gave her 3 days of and it came right back. This time I gave it for 5 days. She is doing really well. it looked like Micoplasmosis but the vet said no, that it was from dust from being cooped up from the winter and it gave her an infection. The Tylan 50 does seem to help. If it happens again, I may refer to your situation and try the Baytril for her. I know it isn't serious because she has always been the only one who gets it and it's the same side of her face every time. HUGE swollen sinus and crusty eye. Sneezing and tired. She eats like a little piggy all through it though. She is doing really great right now. I try to keep her out of cold drafts and dusty environments. This is the first night in awhile that she is sleeping with the flock. I had been bringing her in nights. I'm glad your hen is better! I heard from a few others this winter that they had birds with the same thing.
