Silkie thread!

What would cause one of the eggs under my broody to develop slower than the rest? They were all set at the same time. I candled and one is moving around but looks a few days behind the others.

It was probably at the edge and did not stay as warm, or it was laid a few days later by a different hen.

Hi LadyKotaDoria, I have one like that from my hatch as well. Of course, it is the one my son has fallen in love with and called "Buzz Chickyear". It was smaller, not doing well, couldn't walk right (no balance), couldn't open its eyes, and had deformed feet. I had had "the talk" with my son about it not living through the night the night before last, but it is slowly getting stronger. I put a buddy in with it to keep it company (another silkie with a slipped tendon that is also doing better), and kept them separated from the rest. I added "Vi-tal" powder to the water (gotten at my local feed store), and dipped its beak in the water to drink every few hours the day after it was hatched, and added Band-Aid shoes to its feet to straighten them. On day 3, I cleaned its eyes with a wet q-tip, and they stayed open for a while. I clean them every half day and they are starting to stay open on their own. I took off the shoes because it was having trouble standing with them on. The feet are mostly straight, but I'm more concerned with him getting around to eat and drink at this point. I made a mash of vitamin water and chick starter crumbles, by mixing them together and crushing them in a bowl with a spoon until they were a water paste. I then dipped his beak in it every few hours (careful not to get it in his nose), so that he was getting some nutrients. It is day four. He is still alive. He is now walking on his own (though he falls a lot), and is eating and drinking on his own. I did put some crushed mealworms down to entice him to eat, and this seems to have worked. His eyes mostly stay open, and though he gets pasty butt, he appears to be doing better. I hope this helps. Sometimes, despite everything you do, their little bodies just don't have the energy to make it past the first few days for whatever reason (genetics, difficult hatch, injury...). You can only do so much to help them. Good luck! Buzz Chickyear
These were from the feed store. I believe home breed stock is better, you never know with the breeding of hatchery birds. The timing was perfect. I went in to get more vitimens for the water when they would leve the nest. They had Silkies, so I picked up 4 of them. Eggs were stll hatching when I got home. I put them in the nest and she tucked them under herself for protection right away, as she growled at me once again for messing with her. She is a great mom, just a year old this week and has gone broody twice.

the cotton ball is one of the energetic silkies. She was in the nest for the night, then popped out to get a little more to eat. She has the other chickens trained not to hurt her peeps. That is Lucy. The one a littler further off she will not let come closer. It is so much fun just learning how really basic smarts chickens have. She knows which chickens not to ever trust, and which ones just keep an eye on.

They certainly carry a mix of gene; the bird immediately above is wheaten; possibly blue wheaten (which means that Mama or Daddy is not black).
I thought the dad looked blue in the pic but thought maybe it was just me..?? I am only a year onto Silkies and am far from an expert tho

My silkies a mix? I bought them from a local breeder, with intent of buying 6 Purebred silkies BUT after looking at some chick photos of others, im questioning it?
Also any thoughts on what colors they will be (besides the obvious Lol)

Beautiful mama! Good mama. :)
Ha, no pic..that was meant for the paint looking mama.

And now, also for that white..and Tuna? Really...will have to try that. I do give them egg once in a while..but make sure they have food right there, and of course water.
And, I love the pine shavings. I use it every where..in the brooder, the nest boxes, for the broody hen. :)

Thanks so much!
