Silkie thread!

Finally got some pictures of my 3 older babies. They are 7-almost 8 weeks old now. And all are getting in nice crests :) The first one is the white pullet. At least I believe she is :) Then there is the buff w/ the funky tall crest thats still filling out haha! I feel pretty sure she's a girl. What do you think? And the last is my other white baby. This is the one I am thinking is a Roo, just going off of the shape of the crest, tail, comb, ect. The comb is wider then the pullet's but is still flat. I'd like to hope it's a girl but I have always felt roo on this one. What do you guys guess? I am probably going to have to sell this one.
Gorgeous pics but they don't do your babies justice! In real life they are stunning! I love your little buffs fluffy flat top! Looking at these pics of the one you're wondering about I'm really leaning toward pullet. So cute!

Ok so I am incubating muscovy eggs I bought off someone and there was a mystery chicken egg. So for kicks, just to see if it would hatch the way I was incubating my duck eggs ( only turning once a day and a dry incubation until the eggs told me otherwise) I went ahead and placed the egg in the bator. 22 days later this lovely surprise popped out! How awesome is that. It's so adorable!!

Best surprise ever! Cute lil' fluffer!

So how do you tell a boy from a girl in silkies?  I have 5 and am completely confused.  Some of mine have combs, only one is growing a decent Mohawk at this point, one has a little round head with no comb, yet a friend up the road who has lots of chickens told me they are ALL girls.  I'm so lost.  They are around 3 months old-ish.  (bought them from Tractor Supply)  LOVE them though!  They are SO sweet!!

I'm in the same predicament.
We've got 5 straight run and all I can go by is who crows and who doesn't.

I've said already on here what I go by! But that's just me!
Ususally a roo baby will start early doing the roo thing pecking at bugs, food, etc. Making the noises they do!
Trying to call the hens to him! LOL

Something I wanted to say about the mite problem! When I had a Quaker Parrot? I bought those bird protectors to hang on the outside of his cage. Well they smelled just like those cakes that I had to put in the mens urinals when I was assigned to cleaning Latrines! And sure enough! I checked the ingriedients and it is the same thing! I got the cakes and put them in socks/pantyhoses to hang around the coops! Didn't have any mite problem after that.

When you're poor and can't afford all the nice things to use? You improvise! And that's exactly what I had to do!

My ambiguous chick decided to finally be a cockerel (what I wanted)

Streamers popped out within the past week. He just needed to fill out more (especially in the tail)

And here is my interesting crew of two co-broodies, a silkie hen and a half silkie hen, a turkey poult who is about 2.5 months old and can't get over the fact that her mothers have raised more children since her, 3 olive egger babies and one leghorn/marans cross baby.
I've got a beautiful paint chick that is feathering out like a girl but is tall like a boy. I'm sure it's a boy because thats all I've managed to hatch from my hens eggs. I suppose maybe because I need a bettter boy. So I'm keeping him to replace the roo I have now. He has that brown hue(?) tohis hackle feathers which isn't what I really want. The previous boy I had, also had the unwanted color so I sold him pretty quick. He's getting spoiled by a little girl. lol This one I have now is acting like a roo already. He is protecting a small flock of littlier chicks. Although he is friendly if I go to catch any of his "babies" he goes to protect them. A trait I love in a roo.

My hen is also getting replaced but I want to find one unrelated that is SQ. Mine is beautiful but she don't lay many eggs before she goes broody. And her eggs don't all hatch. I think they are too closely related. Also it's a real job to get her to lay good eggs. I've tried everything even giving her vitamins everyday, oyster shell, boiled eggs and still her eggs are thin on the top and they aren't smooth but they have a rough feel to them. She is broody now so she's sitting on some eggs for me.

Boy I got off topic, sorry.

If anyone is looking to rehome a cute pullet, I'm looking for a nice one to spoil! Not going to breed or show...just spoil and love! I'm just throwing that out there...

I keep trying to talk my husband into getting a couple of silkie babies! He keeps responding with; "You better have a place to move to with them"!

I'd say yep as a matter of fact I do.. See ya! haha. My hubby knows if I want something bad enough im going to get it and him being bossy isent going to stop me lol. He'd never try that move cause he knows he'd lose lol. Just get a few chicks and see what he does. Do you really think he'd just up and give them away out from under you if you already had them? Make up a good argument about how lots of ppl have them, they are so easy and quiet, and at least they are outside. You should be able to have something you really want for yourself and he should respect that even if it's after you already got a few ;) 2-3 is always better then what you could have.. Silkies are kinda addicting lol. I guess im just more stubborn about the whole "my hubby wont let me" because ive had pets all my life, and he never did and even he understood that's just who I am and I refuse to live without them. He knows it makes me happy and when I convinced him I was ready for chickens this spring, he wasent very thrilled but since they are outside he is very tolerant and lets me do my thing with them. Everyone needs a hobby :) Goodluck!
