Silkie thread!

It's funny how this all started with my first six original baby silkies! I ended up with four non-bearded, one bearded and one non-bearded Roo! The reason I knew it was a Roo was because of it's ankle feathers! They were longer than the hens ankle feathers. I kept saying; "Look at those Legs"! Well wouldn't you know it! His name ended up being "Legs"! LOL So I always check the ankle feathers to see if they are short or long! And believe it or not? The longer ankle feathers seemed to always turn out a Roo! Other than our Lil Maria! She had us both fooled! LOL She looked like a gangly teenager for months. I was sure it was a Roo. But she proved us wrong when she laid her first egg! But she's been the only one with long ankle feathers that turned out a hen!

That's why I was asking!

LOL Looking at the two white chicks! I'd say the bottom one was looking like a Roo by looking at the feathers! I always did the ankle feather thing though with the same aged babies. They grow so quickly!

The next thing I'd do is look at the little booty to see if there was a split at the top of it. If I saw one of those? I wouldn't get that baby. It was probably a Roo!

It's just things I learned along the way after hatching and raising so many silkies through the years.

Was I right all the time? No But it did prove right most of the time! So find out as much as you can and always be open to learn new things to take wonderful care of your chickens!

I take lots of pictures and have been reading through chunks of this massive thread, so hopefully I can start to piece some stuff together... I guess I'll be waiting a while to see if you're right on the roo, 1 wouldn't be bad if he's not obnoxious...

Reading through your reply are you saying that as babies if the wing feathers are a little be longer they may turn out to be Roo's ?

The ankle feathers Dear! The back leg feathers! It seems like they should be more the knee feathers considering where they are located, but it's their ankle feathers. The part that bends when they sit down.

That's good to know! The bigger one with the longer leg feathers is the more dominant one who sat one his sister all the way home and pooped all over her! The little one is the smarter one though...she's the one who figured out the nipple waterer 1st!

Absolutely! I never had any doubt! It will be interesting to see if our predictions are true!!!
Oh true true! I'm so excited to see what they become! I'm having to live my chicken life thru y'all right now. I have my kids and posted their pictures on the House Chicken Thread! But no new babies to be sexing and watching grow up! These keep me busy enough. Just like Martha Mae that's knocking on the door to be let back inside so she can get in her cage! LOL
