Silkie thread!

My Wife told me yesterday that she heard four of our five Silkies crow and I said that can't be.
Well, I just let them out this morning and observed.   It's official, apparently out of a batch of five straight run Silkies, we ended up with 4 roos. :sick
Now I have three roosters to re-home and so far no takers on Craigslist even for free.
Why can't my odds be like that for the lottery?

oh no!!!! I'd buy a lottery ticket this week for sure with that luck! Make sure to post on here in the classified section too!
well if you think about it odds like that are the lottery... you most likely will lose. So don't buy a ticket...now if you buy 5 straight run and get 4 hens and a roo then you've won head to the gas station and bet it all.

Excellent! I wanted to see this thread since I finally signed up today. Heavy lurker for about 2 years...
I'll show my Silkies I own. I own some other types of chickens but my Silkies are my own bought chickens that I have had since babies.
They're 6 weeks right now and I have no idea what their sexes is but I have names for them.

Yes I have food coloring on their butts so I can decipher who is who. The blue has always had a head like that... They're the odd duck to be honest... Their peeping is even raspy.

And this is from a few days ago! And no, none of them pooped on me for the half hour I had them on me haha

Hope that wasn't too much!

Now that's a lap full of love! Silkies are just the greatest! That one in the far back corner has that look! LOL The mean look is what I call it. Not happy about something - like having their picture taken!
The only time I had problems recognizing any of them was when they got wet in the rain. But as soon as they'd make a sound? I knew right away who was who!
My XH had to take care of the crew for me when I went out of state for my new grand daughters arrival into the world! When I came home I found their head feathers had been marked with different colored markers! Other than the one Roo he couldn't tell any of them apart!

Each hen w/ babies or just a single chicken had their own crate/cage they slept in, inside the house. So he marked them all to keep them in the right order and right cage! Unbelievable!! I was happy when the colors wore off!

I usually pop them under as soon as I've checked them over. Hopefully mommas hormones are still screaming , ' more babies ' . Just watch her for 10 mins too be sure and if in doubt try again tonight.
Toss in the egg it came out of too! She'll really think it's hers then! I always did that with my momma's! And I did it when she was off the nest - outside doing her duty! After dark is also a good time too!
Some mommas will take them right in and others won't! And trust me! They know exactly how many eggs they are supposed to have too. I've had hens look and search for a bad egg I've removed from the nest. I'd have to give her a ceramic egg to replace the one I removed to keep her happy!
We mothers!!!! like to keep our little feathered mommas happy too!

You know some cultures consider black meat Silkies a medicinal delicacy to eat if you re-home them free? Or are you ok with that? Just the way it is - sighl

Better to give the roos as pets to kids you know because the Silkie boys are usually very sweet unlike pullets that can get hormonal. Plus it's better for kids handling and holding roos rather than mishandling laying hens. Here's hoping you find them all homes.

It's too bad it is risky business trying to sex day-old bantams. This is why I wait until the pullets are old enough to identify before purchasing. Of course there are the $25 DNA lab tests that can ID the sex of a Silkie chick but it's still at least a 4-week wait to get results. AmberWavesSilkies offers the test to ID their Silkies at $25 each bird and will hold the Silkie for you until the results are back if you want a definite pullet when purchasing from them. They are a high quality business and their Silkies are not cheap feed store pets.

At least you got one pullet. Last year we got 9 blue silkie chicks in the hopes of getting a couple of pullets to replace the 2 hens we had lost over the winter. No such luck. All 9 were cockerels.
