Silkie thread!

LOL_ "Death by stupid". We have dog houses and tarps everywhere in case a sudden storm hits before I can get everyone out of it. They just stand there like sad, wet paper towels.

We got lucky a couple weeks ago with our Silkies.
There was a weather alert for a pop-up thunderstorm with potential hail and we put the birds up thinking we were going to get it.
About 30 minutes later I thought it had passed to the north, or it looked like it did on the map, so like a goober I let them out.
Fortunately our run is covered with two different kinds of banner material, but the sides aren't protected.
Well, when the hail started those little heads popped up, having never seen anything like that and apparently some of the hail that was bouncing off the ground, made it into the run and one of the kids got hit, but fortunately not hard enough to injure him.
I've never seen chickens move so fast as they did hauling tail under the coop where they stayed until it was over.
I'm afraid they were smarter than I was this time around.

honestly this color wasn't my intent at all! I guess i just bread the right combination to get them. The mother is a smooth black sizzle that has a little red leakage in her breast, the father is a normal black silkie.

kab, love the video of mama and babies. And, I was enjoying the sound of the wild birds in the back ground..very pretty.
Your mama looks like she's a good concerned mom. Just a talking away to her babies, and they were sticking right there with her. Cute.

Thanks! She is a very concerned mom. She looks awful right now. Brooding will do that. Also the babies really liked what was left of her beard. They are still house chicks, but I'm trying to expose them to the outside a hour or two at a time. Momma really wasn't having the rest of the flock nosing through the hardware cloth. She is super protective. i would like for them to be able to be with the flock full time, but I think they are a little small yet to introduce to the flock permanently.

She won't stay white. Looks like some Partridge going on there. Cute!

I don't vent sex them! I raise their little tail up and look at the booty! If there's a split at the top? Then it was usually a Roo!

I've really only done that on new hatchlings! Can't remember doing it on older ones! It wouldn't hurt to check though! You'll know for sure if you check older known sexes now, wouldn't you?

My husband says the split is needed for the Roosters "Thang" to have room to come out and do his business!
