Silkie thread!

This is my black silkie rooster he is suppose to be black but has some colored feathers on his neck and greenish feathers on his tail. I just hatched some of his chicks and two of them are very light colored. The silkie hen i have
400
is black. Im wondering what color these chick will be.

Ok, might sound like a silly question, but remember, I've never owned a rooster before.  My boy has been crowing now for three days, but, he's only 4 and a half months old, maybe a bit older. So the question?  Yep.  When, can he be a man!

Mine are usually ' working ' at around 6 months. Easy way to find out whether or not he's ' shooting blanks ', crack a few eggs open and check for the bullseye.
I should say that when they first start covering the hens it takes them a few months to get it right. And the older hens won't let them anywhere near them till they are ready.

You are very brave ! Even a full grown Silkie wouldn't be much of a mouthful so yes you will need to take measures to keep them away from your pens. For the wound I would apply vitamin C powder ( ascorbic acid ) made into a paste , directly to the puncture wounds. If you aren't able to get any irrigate with saline and spray with blukote or a similar type wound spray.

The thing I'm surprised about is that though I know a black snake will eat eggs, and chicks, I never thought one would try to kill something it could never swallow.
One thing was for sure and that was it was intent on constricting and killing the rooster.
We're on the lookout now and have placed the roosters in a another spot until we can find the perpetrator.
As much as I hate to have to, I'm going to have to get rid of the snake because it's just a matter of time until he comes back.

I know where I can get the wound spray online, but what about the vitamin C powder?

Vit C ( ascorbic acid ) is available at most health stores in a satchel. Some chemists stock it too. Snakes are capable of swallowing things far greater in size than themselves .

Sorry to change the subject, I just have a quick question. I heard a clicking noise coming out of the brooder box. When I checked to see what it was, I noticed my momma hen clicking her beak. She has a straight normal beak, but I think the end may be too long, because she seems to be getting her bottom beak stuck sideways, one side or the other, whenshe eats, and then clicks it back into place. Her top beak is quite curved, so Im thinking it mayneed trimmed. Any thoughts? I dont wantto start something I can undo by trimming it the wrong way or something. Thanks!!!

So I was thinking about useing an old 40 gallon breeder aquarium (36"x18"x16") that I used for a lizard in the past for my chicks when they come. I have a screen top and heat lamps from the past lizard aswell so I thought it would be a good idea. But what do you all think?

I wouldn't use a fish tank, not good ventilation and too small. I would get a big plastic tote more room to move out of the heat.
