Silkie thread!

Do
Ok, so I'm pretty sure my 13 week old silkie, Inky, is a pullet. She's sitting in the nest box, sometimes on the fake egg...pretending to lay an egg? Pretending to go broody?
400
also, as you can see...putting bedding on her back.

So cute love it!!

HI !

Looking for some advise on when to turn the light off for the silkies ?
Since they take longer to mature im assuming you keep the heat lamp on longer ?
I also only have two in the brooder if that makes a difference. not a lot of them to snuggle up together.

thanks!

Guess it kinda depends on few diff things..yea they would be able stay lil warmer if there were more! Are they inside or outside ? How old are they?what kinda temps ya having? The more feathered they are the better . I always watch mine to see how they are reacting panting w/wings dropped too hot trying stay out of the light..huddled together peeping too cold. Mine stay in brooder outdoors during day in 90's here then drops 70's night so they go in my shed w/ heat light (it's raised quite a bit too) until morning. Mine are about 2 weeks old & I have 6.

Hello thank you for your info. Mine are in the house in the spare bedroom in a very large rubber type brooder. I have moved the heat lamp up higher ever few weeks and it is on the lower of the two settings. Sorry I do not know exact temp. I was basing it on where they were sleeping in the brooder. They don't pant and sometimes they are under it and sometimes they sleep in the other corner. I don't think they are cold just wondering at what age could I turn it off ? I don't mind leaving it on longer if need be of course.

That's how I did my red sex links inside in tote! Are your lol guys pretty feathered at this point ? The idea is to start at 90 degrees & drop temp 5 degrees each week until 4th week when you reach 75. Yes I have brooder thermometer I don't use it.. The better indicator is how they act..that's what I go by. My last set were mostly feathered by 6 weeks & I didn't add heat just let them cuddle up at night.

As a general rule of thumb I start leaving mine out during the day from 4 weeks ( weather dependent ) . Once they reach 6 weeks I will put them out in the ' grow out ' pen. So long as they have a draught free covered area , but be warned , you will need to check on them after dark, just to be sure they are ' tucked up in bed ' .In regard to temps in the brooder this link is very helpful.
