Silkie thread!

Many thanks for the reply; I thought her plumage pattern more resembled a partridge than a gray. I think she will grow up to be a very pretty lady (or gentleman...).
The chipmunk is my 2-week old easter-egger chick.

I'll post another picture of her in a few weeks time to see what people think.

I think they are both CUTE as can be!!

I guess BillS2 only joined long enough to re-home this Silkie roo.

His name used to be Crazy Legs but because he is red, white and blue, his name is now Uncle Sam. Sam for short. I brought him home on Saturday and put him in a cage in the yard with food, water and plenty of shade. Checked him a couple of hours later and he had gotten over heated. I brought him in and wet his feet, comb and wattles. I took the sprayer and sprayed his back and his head started to loll, so I used the sprayer on his chest and belly. When it seemed like he was starting to recover, I wrapped him in a towel and got on the emergency forum to see what else I could do. I wrapped him in a towel because this room has an air conditioner and I didn't want him to get chilled.

I held him on my lap while I watched tv that night and put him in a small cage in our parlor to sleep. Yesterday, I let him out to wander around and when I came in here to watch tv, he found me and jumped into my lap. I was soooo tickled that he did that. I didn't want him pooping on me so whenever he got restless I would put him in the floor. I did that 3 times and each time, he got back in my lap. I am so excited and hope he continues to be my lap chicken but I figure when I have to put him out with the other chickens, he won't want to be my pet anymore.

He seems to be doing ok but I have no idea how much he should be eating and drinking. I have food and water down for him but I have not seen him eat much of the chick starter and it looks like he only drinks once a day. That can't be right because he's still alive but he drinks something like 2-3 ounces of water with a few drops of acv and then I don't see him drinking again.

I have been giving him mashed/boiled egg and he eats some of that but it doesn't seem like enough to sustain him. He is going potty but not as much as I think he should. He is running around in the house and I'm not finding poops all over the place.

He seems to be missing his flock mates because when I put him up at night, he calls for them. Or at least that is my interpretation of what he is doing. He also howls. Have you ever heard a chicken howl? I never have. I thought he was dying. At first I didn't even know it was him and he was sitting in my lap when he did it, he has done it a couple of times since then, once in the floor and a 2nd time in my lap.

When I had to separate one of my bantams recently she didn't want to eat because she was nervous in her new surroundings in the house. Took her a day to start eating. I would dip his beak in water several times a day to be sure he is getting enough water. Some chickens don't like the taste of the ACV, so I would leave it out and put vitamin/probiotic powder in his water with a little sugar. I like the Rooster Booster brand that I buy at Tractor Supply. My chickens prefer "scrambled" egg and LOVE Quaker Old Fashioned oats dry. I would try different foods to see what he likes best.
Good luck! He sounds SO sweet! I love my Silkie roosters best. They have loads of personality!

So my broody silkie hen has her temporary broody suite complete with nest side food and water service. She is such a sweet and calm girl. She sat and just watched me bulid everything up around her and not one sound. I feel much better knowing she has all the food and water she needs close by.

Thank you for the photo! Mine are still under a pound I think at 4 months. When did yours reach full size? They are on an 18% protein feed but thinking of putting the whole flock on starter 19% feed. Which I think will be fine for everyone since the summer heat is coming and they eat less anyway.

Beautiful Boy! Love the name :)

My silkie is around 12 weeks old and pretty fluffy, but covered in pin feathers! I don't know how she can have that many feathers. No wonder they are so fluffy! lol

Are there different types of Silkies? My new little guy is white with a red comb and blue wattles but his skin is all black. Is he a particular breed?
