Silkie thread!

I am in South West Victoria in Australia

If he is a Silkie then I am happy but is there a way to find out for sure? I dont want to be breeding what I think are pure SIlkies and then sell them or eggs and have a buyer confront me with the fact they arent :th

Well your to far for me to give you one.

Absolutely love that white hen with the black around the neck and tail, beautiful! I want one like that!

I am hoping that she is one of the ones I can get, she also has some really nice light brown ones. Unfortunantly cant get a pic just yet but be assured once I get them pics will be coming

I know it's blurry but it is a vitamin supplement rich in Iron, essential Amino Acids and necessary minerals. I put this in my Silkies water every other day to help prevent Vitamin deficiency related problems, such as wiry neck and a few others. Don't always happen but I feel like better safe then sorry, and that bottle last a good long time cause it don't take much. I'm no expert by no means but it worked for me.
Congrats and enjoy your new babies.
O btw I did this till they were fully feathered and now I do it once a week.

Awesome thanks!

Last night I took my final walk around the pens making a head count and thought it funny the way one grow out pen settles down to sleep for the night. The broody hen hatched them in an old nest box (not meant for silkies) I removed her at four weeks old. They still try to pile into that same box. All thirteen of them! Hah!

Thirteen eight week old silkie chicks. Still trying to pile into that nest every night.
All my Silkies and LF sleep in nestboxes. The perch that came with the small coop is only 2x2 so all our girls snuggle in 3 nestboxes. Since the perch is only used during the day I always assumed hens were supposed to sleep in nestboxes LOL! But it's better than using the floor where they can get pooped on.

Are you certain you need the iron supplementation? Isn't that a little rough on their developing liver and internal organs? My vet had me use Poly-Vi-Sol no iron for our chickens and only one drop on the side of the beak one time per week. I believe in the vitamins but a bit skeptical about the harsh iron unless it's specifically prescribed? Can you explain more?

Sorry but I cant explain any more. all I know is that my vet told me what to use because I was concerned about the vitamin deficiencies and it's effects. He told me to put 1 dropper in a pint of water 1 day then nothing the next day then 1 dropper the next day and so on. I have heard others talk about the no Iron but I have had no problems at all with my Silkies, 2 of them are now 10 months old and 2 are 6 months old, 2 hens and 2 roo's. I couldn't find any Poly-Vi-Sol. So I asked my vet what else I could get. I have heard all good things about the Poly-Vi-Sol. Maybe it is better for them, but my Silkies are happy and healthy so it worked for me. Sorry I'm not more educated in the do's and don'ts, I only know what works for me in my experiences.
2 different vets with 2 different supplements ????? Now I want to do more research.

Iron supplementation is not recommended in chicks but bio available iron is helpful in times of extreme molt. A deficiency in adult birds will usually show up in the form of anemia or pigmentation loss in coloured feathers. There are other vitamin supplements on the market with much less iron. If you are feeding a good quality feed you may only need supplement when they are molting or suffering with illness.

Awesome thanks!
It has been brought to my attention that maybe you might want to research the need for the Iron. I can only tell ya that it worked for me with no problems but I myself am going to research this more. Poly-Vi-Sol with no iron may be the better choice. But definitely use a vitamin supplement.
