Silkie thread!

Okay guys , I have a question. I am wondering how everyone keeps their silkie's boots from getting caked with poo? I scoop out the poo frequently and it seems the minute my roo poos he is walking in it. has anyone ever heard of an UN-booted silkie?

I  am wondering what kind of chicken you have on your profile picture? Is it a Mille coloring? it is really pretty.

Thanks! She is. I lucked out with her since I bought her as a calico and as she matured, her pattern and color cleaned up into a really lovely MF on mahogany. I have a matching rooster that I just introduced her to. I won't be hatching until the spring, but I'm just itching to get started on that project!!

@JessPhillips the suggestion that @andreacroyle gave about keeping the rooster indoors until a more reasonable hour is precisely how I deal with mine. I bring him in at night, and he sleeps in a crate until 9am when we put him out. He is also wearing a No-Crow Rooster Collar that decreases his volume enough so I sleep through his crowing if he wakes up before I do. He wears it all day to keep my neighbors happy too, even though I much prefer his natural voice.

You can Trim their foot feathers if you're not attached to them. I use wood shavings as bedding for their coop and run because it seems to dry up the poo and scuff it off their feet pretty well.

Hi everyone, I was just wondering if someone could possibly help me try to tell the sea of my two little silkie chicks? I bought them both unseeded and they are 11 weeks old. I love them both so much already and we have only had them for a month but I think one of them is a roo :( we can't keep any roo's where we live so I will be devastated if you have to give one away! Anyway I will attach some pictures below. Any help would be very much appreciated!

These first few pictures are of the baby that I think may be a roo?

They are so cute together! The one at the front is the one in the first pictures.

This sweet little one is quite a bit smaller in her (?) frame and her face looks more feminine I think :)

My guess would be one of each. The crest of the first is swept back and straight like (I've been told) a Roos. The others crest is more like a Pom Pom which to me looks like a pullet.

Thanks to all the repliers, I guess i will just have to wait! I suggested the 'dark room' technique to hubby, just incase one of our babies is a boy but he was a very firm no :( fingers crossed but i have contacted the breeder we bought them from and she will let me return if they are roo's so i suppose that a good thing.

Thanks all,
jess

That is good you have a place for the Roos to go! I have a four month old that we're pretty sure is a Roo that does not crow yet. I'm just having a hard time imagining they're as loud as a large breed which is what most of the city ordinances are written for. My neighbor had LB hens that were very loud when they layed eggs, louder than any noise I've heard out of my maybe Roo. Maybe roo doesn't have any wattles or much of a comb either. It just might be possible to keep one without it being an issue. TIme will tell I guess, good luck I hope they're both pullets.

How long do you all wait between hearing peeps to seeing external pips? I started hearing peeping around 10 pm last night. It's 9:30 am here now. I got concerned when I checked on my broody and heard lees peeps so I quickly lifted her a bit to see what the issue was. I did see two tiny external pips not sure if they have even broken the membrane yet. I just don't want them to shrink wrap or suffocate. These are not my own flocks eggs and it has been a new experience dealing with shipped eggs this time around. They are due to hatch thursday, tomorrow, day 21. This broody usually hatches early though. Her last hatch with my own flock eggs took very little time and was a day early. She is a bit thinner this time and I have been worried about humidity because the last candling the air cells were huge! Like a quarter inch larger than they were two days before( I had to candle one yesterday morning don't ask I did have a good reason lol). Anyway any advice would be appreciated. I don't want to intervene too soon, and I don't want to wait until it's too late either.
