Hi All... Question...Does everyone cut the feathers around silkie vent to get more eggs fertilized? And how ?
pull out or cut.?
I looked at one girls vent it has just fuzz around it didnt see what to pull and fuzz was short.
I set my eggs from 2 silkie girls each was in with different guys. Tonite Maybe one of the eggs look fertile out of 10 incubating and its day12.
My test group 5 EE eggs all look fertile...going good.Out of 2 years setting my silkie eggs...2 hatched ...one died the other had a bad leg but think my temp was off..still rest werent fertile.

I don't cut feathers on any of my breeds - wings/butts/crests/muffs/beards/feet/or anywhere. As for fluffy butts, my Ameraucana has a fluffier butt than any of my Silkies so IMO fluffy butts interfering w/fertilization is a myth to me. JMHO. I know it takes some inexperienced cockerels a while to get the hang of it but fertilization will eventually happen if the birds are healthy and well. Sometimes underlying health conditions can affect fertilizations that are just too numerous to list.

Lovely! I have a couple of Silkie hens in this color. (been meaning to take some pics of them...) I hatched them out last year, but I have no clue who their parents were lol! Mine looked like little diluted pale partridges as hatchlings... anyone know what color would they be considered?

If the parents were blue partridge, you may have gotten a splash partridge. I hatched a bunch last year. I thought they were blue cream until their adult plumage showed faint partridge markings.

If you need to, I just read somewhere to trim feather above the vent in females and below in males. I think quite a few people have to do this to get better fertility for fluffy breeds!

Is there a way to make a hen go broody

I'm not sure, but if you have a silkie it will probably be soon! lol when one of my silkies went broody my other one saw her and did the same thing. She went broody to. They both crawled under these empty wooden cages we have sitting in our chicken coop which most of the did and stayed there for days. At first I didn't really think about it much, but 4-6 days later I got the smart idea to look under the hens. And what do ya know...EGGS. Lost of them. I really didn't think about it because they normally they didn't lay under there. I candled the eggs and of course there were veins in most of them. We didn't need chicks, but being the person I am we decided to let them hatch. I thought we would have cochin chicks because that's mostly what we had out there, but nope all were pure bred silkies. Funny thing is is that I didn't think my silkie roo was breeding, so you can probably guess how surprised I was to see 7 little silkies hatch. Anyway since it is becoming spring time she might get the idea or maybe not it all depends on the hen herself. But if there is a way to get a hen broody I would sure like to know.
