Silkie thread!

Probably won't be able to locate C.J. My question is what grouping should I seek that has the best chance of obtaining Silkies equal to the hen (Manches) above ? My idea is to hatch an unrelated Rooster of the same type / color as Manches (above). Talked with a person From Blue Ridge Silkies and he a mentioned silver / grey. My opinion is w/o anyone knowing about the ancestry of Manches it an educated guess. Below are photos of a Rooster (Tigre) that Manches hatched a little over a year ago. Not really looking for this color and is posted for information. Have two of these. No hens. This is a preferable color. Name all my chickens. This is Toto Rooster and TuTu Hen, hatched from Manches eggs. The Rooster was very similar in Color to TuTu. edited: Toto sounds like Toe_Toe ,, TuTu sounds like two_two. Manches is the spanish word for stains. Tigre is spanish for tiger and sounds like Tea_grey.
That first Rooster is gorgeous!

There are some lovely ' project ' birds around. They won't necesarily breed true to colour, but nonetheless they are beautiful . This is an old thread but there are some lovely examples. https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/410559/silkies-of-a-different-color

Hi there! We are very excited to be adding silkies in the next month. Just waiting for the breeders girls to start consistently laying after the frigid winter. We are so excited! We saw our first silkie chicks in person at the feed store Friday. So precious & tiny! These are dd's babies and it looks like she wants a paint, buff, blue and sizzle. Then we are Adding Some Polish brood mates of course b/c 4 is not nearly enough for the bantam coop!

Can anyone recommend a good book about silkies? Especially one for an 11 year old girl's year long dream coming true at last! Basic care and things to watch for and their funny anticss there are a couple books on amazon and wondering if they are any good. Thanks for any help.

Not that it matters too much, but I'm pretty sure CJ got out of the Silkie "business". I had a cockerel last year that was hatched from eggs from CJ. So, getting in contact may be darn near impossible.

I showed this boy last year (as a young pullet, actually) and he did fairly well. This was before he started showing all of the leakage in his hackles. I know he is not real typey but his color intrigued me. I was fairly new to silkies at the time and entered him as a splash. I was informed prior to judging that he was actually a paint and I was allowed the opportunity to make the change. At the time I was told that the difference is that splashes will have single feathers with multiple colors and that paints will have only one color per feather, giving them a more spotted appearance. That made great sense until I started noticing that he had both black and white individual feathers in the hard feathers of his wing. So is this an actual paint or is he splash? Any thoughts?
