My silkies do well in winter, as long as you have a few of them so they can huddle. I live in Michigan where this winter -30 degrees wasn't rare, I do not use heat lamps.

I live in Ohio and we regularly get lows in the negatives. I have found that my silkies do better in the cold than many of my large fowl. The only thing that I would caution is that their little furry feet will get frozen if their runs are not kept sufficiently dry.


Edited to add: My birds are also kept without heat lamp.

Well how drafty is your coop? My silkies do terrible in cold weather while my uncles large fowl are fine!

Hey all. I am new to raising chicks. I have 3 Rhode Island reds, 2 barred rocks,and 6 silkies. They are all still really little,still in a brooder. So far everyone is getting along fine. Any suggestions? Will they be ok together?

it probably wouldn't hurt to get him a hen so he can go ahead and have company... As far as hungry probably not... Do you just feed him by hand a couple times a day or do you have hanging feeders where he can eat when ever he wants? Or is he free range? If he's free range he shouldn't be hungry. But I would suggest a hanging feeder if you don't have one already. Lonely yea he could be, more then likely He is... Bored well depends... He is out there all alone, that again is a free range vs. Coop and run question. But all that said. Roosters are roosters and some just crow more then others for absolutely no reason some times lol!
Fyi if your neighbors start to complain and you don't want to get rid of him they do sale no crow collars but they are newer to the market and Idk about there reviews...????

I figure the dogs around here make a whole not more noise than a rooster. However I have a not so nice neighbor and so I worry if the rooster is crowing during "quiet hours" 11 PM - 7AM. Technically that could be a violation of noise ordinances. I had someone tell me that roosters won't crow when they are locked up in the coop and it is dark - HA!!! So far the chickens are only thing she is pleasant about to anyone in the neighborhood but when she runs out of things to complain about chickens may be next,

Help! My Silkie rooster won't stop crowing. He crows in the morning, at night, middle of the day and even at 3 a.m. He used to have a friend who turned out to be a boy and the two of them would crow non stop. So we sadly had to give him away and now we just have the one rooster. I know he shouldn't be alone so we are currently raising 5 little hens to be his new friends but they're still very young. Does he crow because he's alone? Bored? Hungry? Help! My neighbors probably want to kill me.

I have large open vents on either side of the coop. To be honest, it is a bit draftier than I, personally, would like. But I have seen no ill effects in the silkies. I actually added more vents after I experienced a frost-bitten comb in one of my LF roos my first winter. They say that moisture is the worst enemy when it comes to cold and more airflow helps to prevent that. Seems crazy to me, but it has worked.

Thank you, we like him. Is the information that I was given correct, regarding the two colors on one feather?

The feathers on a paint are coloured all the way to the skin and the coloration only appears on the tips of the feather in a splash.
