I'm going to see a breeder today that breeds silkies. Hoping to buy some. Wish me luck! From what I hear I just must have one.
Here are better pics MummsyIII
In a couple of weeks I'm getting a couple of silkie chicks, and I have a few questions, is there any way to sex them, I've heard they are one of the hardest chicks to sex?, how often do they go broody? And how many can they sit on? And any other tips, on keeping them would really appreciate it
ThanksReece![]()
Thank you. Truly. Thanks! Your silkies are gorgeous! I can't wait to see how my little chick turns out!
Another chick hatched under my other white silkie hen today. I hope it's pure silkie. That's the worst part about having a mixed flock that free ranges.
The easiest way to remember is the paint goes all the way to the skin and a splash is just the tips as if you splashed paint on it. Partridge and cuckoo usually have barring . With the partridge being only in the osprey feathers and cuckoo all over. Nice chicks !I was gone all day and just found your post and pic's. I don't think your chick is either splash or paint. I raise both and have never had a chick out of those pens that had barring on the wings like yours. Paints can have a few spots or many. A paint black feather is black from the tip all the way down the quill to the skin. They come from "pigment holes" like a paint horse or appaloosa horse. Here is a couple pic's of my paints. My Paint cock Dapper Dan is spotted like an appaloosa horse.
One of my Paint pullets that is a daughter of Dapper Dan. Black feathers are black all the way down. This is much different than Sp[ash. Paint chicks are often pure white at day old and the spots come later.

These two Splash pulluets are randomly marked. The black and blue feathers are not colored all the way to the skin. Think of it like frosting. I used to have Grey Silkies. They are derived from silver partridge gene. They kind of remind me of your chick. I think your chick could be silver partridge. I can't find my pic's at the moment. I'll look for them. Remember this. Silkies change a great deal from chick to adult. And some keep changing after every molt. Even after all these years raising silkies, they still surprise me. Always take pictures along the way. It's useful to have them to fall back on in the future for comparison.
By the way if there is an answere to this questions haha, why are some silkies , sort of bald headed, like we're you can see their eyes, etc, and then there are some, that have a big bushy head, were u can't see thir eyes only their beak, is there two different names for these, or is it just luck, how they develop? ThanksI'm new to silkies, and just want to get as much info on them as possible, before I get them in 3 weeks
