Silkie thread!

Another update on the little black pullet that had the brain injury. She is up and walking. She's not standing all the way up like she is suppose to but she is still improving. Her balance is still off but thats improving as well. I did a little walk test on her yesterday. Most chickens tend to get off balance when we pick them up then set them back down. She was just a little more off balance than normal. She is eating and drinking and taking advantage of the greens I give her everyday now that everything is green here. There is this weed that all my chickens love

that grows everywhere. I have a little patch that I won't allow DH to mow, weed eat or spray. I gather a bucket full and pass it out to everybody. I keep nearly all my chickens penned so I have to provide them with greens. The only really big hen I have gets to roam free a couple times a week. The hawks around here will swoop up the silkies. This hen is a real bruiser of a chicken.

Anyway, Thank you to all of you that helped with your advice and experience so I could get this pullet back up and living life like a chicken should.

I put all the happy ones up to show you all how thankful I am.

I just got 2silkies ( so the breeder says) and I'm praying they are the fluffy faced adorable silkies I'm seeing in a lot of everyone's pics!!! I have to find out what's going on with one of my babies though! I pray it's not contagious bc he shared a brooder for almost 2weeks with 5 other chicks!!

If I didn't blow all my money on my care credit card last week on the vet for my Persian cats and another baby chick I had to put down I would rush this little guy to blue pearl but I don't have the money for it right now.

it cost me $130.00 last week on one baby chick just for the vet to tell me he had a herpes virus in his legs n had to be put down. I cried. He couldn't walk when I brought him in. I was so upset bc the lady gave him to me to take home to try n nurse back to health when I bought my baby seramaS from her and I just knew I could help the poor little guy but it didn't work out that way. Anyways I'm glad to be here n excited to learn a lot from everyone. Any input on my baby would be gladly appreciated! Thanks

If it had Marek's, you will have chicks that die from it and will mostly always have it on your property and it will continue to kill Some chicks or chickens. The best you can do is get vaccinated hatchery chicks, or hatch your own and vaccinate on day one. Then they need to be quarantined for 3+ weeks and not be cross contaminated with your flock because they are all exposed. Even the ones without symptoms will be exposed and can spread Marek's.

It's an upsetting thing , we do have a support group on here. I got a batch of silkie eggs in March from Bargain silkies and was very happy with the service and the silkies I hatched. I am sure there are other sellers that are equally good but I can only go by who I ordered from. And I could mix colors. Incubating is super more rewarding than buying chicks. And exciting.

One question I have is my coop is going to be from an old playhouse with windows. Was goin to have the window lead to an outside run but silkies won't uae the ramp will they? Do I need to cut a small door for them? Including a pic to playhouse.

Oh now that's a nice coop. I see lots of potential there. The mezzanine would make a great brooder. Silkies will use the ramp , they just don't fly or like to jump from large heights.
You may need to train them to use the ramp by placing treats at the top.
We also cut a little arched door at the bottom of the front door ,just for the slow learners.

My silkies use a ramp easily starting at three weeks when I introduce them to their outside grassy area. I put their feed and water dish just out of reach at the foot of the ramp outside in good weather for two or three days so they get the idea. My silkies like to jump up on rocks and pieces of fire wood for good vantage points to jump off on top of their mates. Some silkie chicks can be very adventurous. I have had some jump as high as two feet to a folding chair seat at five weeks old. And it was a pullet silkie baby.

The pop door to my chick house pulls out every day and is used as a ramp by the chicks. Mine isn't very high but I have visited some silkie breeding farms that have ramps five feet long.

Your play house/coop is adorable. I love the color.
