Silkie thread!

A,Pied silkie

I got a new silkie to keep my lonely Roo company but have no idea what color he/she is. Anyone have any ideas? Also I have an update on the crowing! We have been locking him up at night and covering his cage and no crowing at 3am or anytime in the middle of the night. We don't necessarily care that he crows all day....so he roams the yard freely. But crowing problem solved!

That looks like two of mine! What color were the parents?

Silky question.... First off I'm new to chickens. I got a young silky pair 5/6mo and sadly the pullet was carried to me by my puppy.... Sad to say I think she wasn't truly locked in the coop when it was shut up last night. I don't let the dogs in the yard unless the chickens are up. We are in transition and the silkies will be kept in the chicken tractor we built. Right now all the 4 mo old chickens and the 5/6 mo silkies were sharing, and free range during the day. It's only big enough for 2-3 silkies, and that's the plan. Again, they will stay in there alone and stay, as I know silkies are not good free Rangers. Anyhow..... So now my little silky cockerel is alone till Monday when we get an older silky hen, she about a year and the cockerel is about 5/6 mo old. How would I go about introducing the two?

Oh sorry for your loss. If you are not concerned with bio security , then pop the hen in a carry cage and place her in or next to the coop for 24 hours or so.This way they can get a good look at each other.

The mom was black and the dad was white. However, I found my little girl dead this morning and I'm heart broken!! She grew into a silver silkie. I live in Arizona and I'm worried my silkie died because of the heat. I feel like a horrible chicken owner. Does anyone else live in hot climates? Do Silkies not do well in the heat? What should I have done? I still have one silkie male left and I don't want him to die.

:hugs oh I'm sorry! Make sure your birds have fresh clean water at all times, esp in this heat. In mid summer I freeze a water bottle full of water and put it in their watered during the day. Refreezing at night.

Very sad, breeds with rose and walnut combs don't do so well in extreme heat. Some people install misters and natural cover like trees can be hosed down to create a ' trickle down ' effect.
Occasionally we experience 40 degree Celsius and I put frozen peas and mixed vegetables in the water bowls. Cools the water down and gives them something to keep their minds occupied.

I make sure they always have shade and put ice in their water. I also try and hose down the shady area so it stays a bit cooler and I mist them with the hose (mister setting).
