Silkie thread!

They're beautiful! Is the one on the right smooth feathered? I think smooth feathered silkies and sizzles are super adorable!

Yes it is, I also think the on on the left will be a smooth also, but not quite sure the feathers are tattered on it's wings, not as smooth as the other one. And not sure on the sex yet. These are our first silkies/ sizzles!

I feel like I got pretty lucky with these guys. My first hatch and my first Silkies, and it looks like I got a little of everything! I was wondering about the vaulted skulls/crests and beards/muffs. Does anybody have pics of grown-up versions of any one of my little guys? I'm interested in the black one in particular, because he looks like he's going to have a beard, but no crest and I can't find any pictures of an adult who may look similar. Also, any comments on the color possibilities or quality would be greatly appreciated! We got the eggs from a breeder who's stock had won a few shows and were told we could get lucky and hatch out a SQ Silkie. Being pretty new to chickens in general, Silkies were a little strange looking to us at first, but people rave about their Silkies SO much, we HAD to give them a try. They are quickly winning over our hearts and becoming our new favorite breed. Here's the pics: (My 7 yo boy named them)

These two were hatched on Saturday by my partridge silkie, but come from white parents. My question is what color are they? They look like whites, but have yellow tint to them. I'm pretty sure whites have yellow tints while they are chicks, but another opinion would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

You are correct , yellow chicks are whites. :)

I have cold winters here in Oakley CA. The weather already is showing slight chances of rain my chicks are 5. Weeks old give or take, and won't be introduced to the coop/ run for awhile but I'm getting 2 juvies bout 6 months old. I put 2 shower curtains screwed to the run ( hope they hold with winds). I'm asking do you think that's enough to keep the majority of the rain out, as well as insulate for cold days in winter gets as low as 25 deg. Sometimes. I've also got a deep layer of straw in the run. Pic of coop w/ out the curtains.

Naliez:

cute chickies! Lots of interesting colors. It will be fun to see what colors they develop into. Whether a chick has a vaulted skull or not does not always tell you how much crest they are going to have as an adult. Booger has a vaulted skull- Slimy Bob does not. In most adults you can't even tell if they have vaulted skulls or not just by looking because the crest covers it up. Your black one will likely grow into a crest. I'm attaching some photos from my latest silkie hatch of chicks that were born non vaulted without a lot of head pouf. The chicks with a non vaulted skull grew into plenty of crest by the time they were 8 weeks old. I've never seen a purebred adult silkie without a crest but I've seen non vaulted skull chicks that appear to have no more crest than an ordinary chicken when they are born. Bearded or not is okay either way but some of us just prefer the bearded- at least I do.
