Silkie thread!

Here's my little roo named Ducky. He's so sweet to the girls, he spends more time giving them gifts of twigs and leaves than he does trying to mount them. He wears a no crow collar and tolerates it very well and he's almost completely silent with it on except for his little cluck clucks when he woos the girls. I never would have had a rooster if I wasn't given one by mistake in a sexed batch of chicks and I'm very happy that he's my first, he's been a pleasure to have.

Thank you Twinklin. I'm seriously considering it. If you ever get a chance to get a photo of your collar I'm sure lots of us would love to see it. My chickens live in 15 x 35 run with a roof and coop and only get to free range when I'm able to be outdoors with them. We have too many racoons, hawks and stray dogs for me to feel comfortable letting them free range without supervision. We have a huge flock of wild turkey, about 15 of them, who some up from the creek every afternoon and scavenge under the wild bird feeder to see who dropped something good. They stare at the chickens through the fence but can't get in. I'm sure they would eat all the chicken feed if they could. This is my little guy I would love to keep. He doesn't have a name yet. I'm working on it.

What is a no crow collar? Where do you get one?

you can order them online, I know mypetchicken.com sells them in their accessories section. I made mine. I'll take a picture of it next time I have it off of him. You need to keep them pretty tight which scared me at first but he does fine with it, I check it often to make sure it's not too tight and I check on the birds many times during the day. They only have a small yard so he can't get in much trouble. I've noticed his garbled crows have become less frequent since wearing it the past couple months. I guess he realized the crows don't do any good now so he doesn't bother. He walked backwards for a day when I first put it on and acts funny when I put it back on him after letting him have some time without it but he gets used to it very quickly. I had a chicken that I made a crop bra for to treat pendulous crop a couple years ago and she did the same thing, I guess chickens just don't like accessorizing.

Pasty butt is usually something seen in chicks. A dirty bottom can be an indication of a worm infestation, dehydration or if the stuff around the vent is grayish or white in colour , it could be glee the thrush.

Thanks it must be dehydration its has been very hot the past few days, I bathed her this morning she is much better I put some ice cubes in the water so they can cool down

I currently have 6 Silkies. Such cute little things. I have 2 hens, 1 pullet that just started laying and 3 young ones that are looking like 2 pullets and one cockerel. All Splash in color. I hoping to get some hatching eggs from Catdance Silkies as well.

Here they are

So many wonderful birds in this thread. Hope my baby's look that good when they are older! Here's a recent pic from yesterday.

I can't wait, I have paint silkies and sizzles due to start hatching today and tomorrow. Hoping for a good hatch. I'll post pictures once they are dry and fluffy.
