Silkie thread!

this time i went with animalgenetics.com in ohio. i paid 24.50 for ONE test. i was only doing one and it was a US site so i went for it. i have only don't it the one other time for two silkies and it was $25 ea. BUT there was a site in ontario canada where it was $15 ea for blood sample or 5 for $50. if i did not have the shell from this particular bird i would have sent to canada and done the blood test but much later. as a tiny chic is way to small to cut its nail...i was very squeamish to do that last time but they were older. i don't really remember how old but they had nails. these tiny ones barely show nails at this point. even tho they said (Ohio firm) they tested shells it did not say how to ship etc so i called. you can print out all the forms online. one site said just mail the shells in a paper envelope, ok if it breaks up but this company said no, mail wrapped in something protective so it does not break up...anyway they walk you thru it no big deal. the other two tests were correct. it was blood sample and its DNA...it would be very odd if it was wrong...i don't see how it could be. ??? but never say never i guess....cross contamination or something?

Help!! My Silkie hen that I have is 10 months old and is now broody for the 4th time.  I have noticed she has lost or pulled a lot of feathers off her chest/stomach area, is this normal? I go out a few times a day and move her off nest to outside with others but she has still lost weight. She will eat and drink when I move her so not sure what else to do, really don't feel like locking her up in a cage with air blowing over chest its just too cold outside for that. Any help would wonderful, she is my favorite one I have and I've already dealt with so much with her.

Some hens will pull feathers out of their undercarriage so that they can have direct contact with the eggs in an attempt to keep them up to temp. There are dietary shortfalls that cause ' feather eating ' namely methionine , but this is when they actually eat their own and that of others feathers.
Once a hen has bunkered down I place a little feed under her beak morning and night and ensure that she has water nearby.

Hi all here are my babies they are almost 8 weeks now, a little help with the color? I'm a little confused about the 3 partridge, one has lots of red or buff on head and other 2 lots of black so I thought the 2 w/ black heads might be pullets but now one with black head is looking very much like cockerel I thought it was easier to sex w this color? Or is that not always true? Also I do have 2 blue and 1 dark blue yes?

Any of you wonderful breeders out there have any extra roosters that need a new home? I'm searching for a clean (minimal /no leakage) blue Silkie roo and Showgirl roo (bearded with a bow tie). Obviously I'd like them to be as close to the SOP as possible. I've been searching locally for about a year and haven't had any luck finding what I'm looking for. I'm in TN, so shipping would be required if not close.
They'll have lots of lovely ladies to look after and a nice big coop and run!

Mine are just a week old now but I'll have 1-2 later. I know you're looking for one whose ready to go to work though. I do know someone nearby I can ask for you.

That would be amazing, thank you so much! And, I'm willing to wait for the right boys if need be. I'm a patient lady, like I said, I've already been searching for about a year. Ready to work is preferable, but I'm not opposed to chicks either.

Hello all I was looking for a silkie thread I'm new to BYC and took me ages to find how to reply! Here are some photos of my silkie. She's adorable! But I'm having to trim back some feathers around her eyes so she can see incoming pecks! She's a lot quicker now and not getting hen pecked as much! :D

Very cute! I'm definitely looking for blue though (I would consider black as well). I have quite a few splash hens (and a splash roo I'm looking to replace) and don't breed splash to splash.
