Silkie thread!

Thanks,
I just didn't want white cause hawks can see it easier, I don't have a roof on my run,
Twix looks a lot like your chick jas humbart. I don't have good pics either, I use my kindle XD
I wonder what color jade will be? I'm dieing to find out!!!!!!!!!!!! Wish my chicks would get a little older!!!!!

I have two Silkies that free-range the yard all day. Once we had a very bright white Leghorn too. We have Cooper's Hawks visiting every day in Spring breeding season. We have a lot of hiding lean-to shelters, canopy, and dog houses around the yard for the flock to dive/snooze under to avoid aerial predators. Our hawks will land in the yard or on the fence but won't go after our hiding birds even though they can be seen - darnedest thing! Here are some samples of shelters we set up in the yard over the last few years. Same type of shelters can be set up in an open pen/run area The Leghorn liked to sleep under the stickery rosebush against the chainlink fence and the hawk never bothered her there. A BYCer told me she used a child's low plastic table as a shelter for her birds. I have lawn furniture the chickens have slept under also. Hope this helps with some ideas. Chickens love to snooze/hide in cubby spots and that seems to deter the aerial predators.

I stare at my silkies all the time! But during that time, I have never seen them poop! How long can they go without pooping?? They don't have a pasty butt, they could be pooping when I'm not there but I'm usually watching them all the time lol

Thank you!!! I have goats that are on the same pen, they would probable climb all over that dog crate, but that doesn't matter I guess, thank you for the great tips!!!

Goats are definitely sure-footed and mischievous which is why I don't have any. Had 'em on the farm and they are clever escape artists and jumpers. But if your chickens are accustomed to being around your goats and there are a few shelters around to choose from, the chickens will find a place to snooze/hide away from predators or active goats/kids. Our key is to have shelters of various kinds scattered everywhere in the yard and the hens choose the place and time of day of where to snooze/hide. Once I saw 4 hens dive madly into the nearest doghouse when the Cooper's Hawk landed on the fence. The hens go around the yard all day inspecting all the hiding places so they know where to dive when the time comes in an emergency. With the straw in the doghouses I thought the hens would lay their eggs in them but they never have - they will go to the secluded coop nestboxes to lay their eggs which saves us from having an Easter Egg Hunt around the yard every day!

Totally agree with escape artist! They do like to go in the goat shed and under a structures for the goats.
