Silkie thread!

I purchased a new silkie saturday and was told its a hen but was not given an age. Can someoine help? We are new to the silkie world! I am suspecting its a roo.

Here is my actual crowing roo named frank:

The red comb is not what you want but it seems like buffs may be harder to get black or mulberry colored combs according to what I have read in this thread. The size of the comb looks hen so it is just the color that is suspicious.

Frank is a handsome boy. I love the splash coloring so we are trying for as many splash hens as possible before replacing our blue rooster with another blue rooster that will be unrelated to our rooster's splash daughters.

If you get 18 generations out and still end up with non-Sizzle offspring, I think it will be hard to get breed recognition. I was thinking new breeds need to breed true in 4 generations but that could be cats and not chickens. As long as two Sizzles bred together produce non-Sizzles it is hard to consider it a true breed and not a crossbreed.

Except Sizzles and Silkies have identical breed standards, the only difference being the feather type. Many breeds are accepted in frizzle varieties but not considered mixed breed because offspring of a such frizzle produces both frizzle and smooth offspring. Same thing with Blue. Blue X Blue don't result in just Blue but many breeds are accepted in a blue variety. If a bird breeds true for good body type, color, size, 5 toes, and dark skin, then I'll sure as heck call it a purebred, even if it does produce silkied as well as smooth and Frizzled offspring.

Sizzles can and do breed true, after you breed out the Silkie feathering. It's not a project for everyone, but it's very rewarding when things start coming together. It is certainly no worse than Araucanas with their rumpless tufted standard having lethal genes so you can't breed two standard birds together without having a 25% mortality and 25% non-standard offspring. All it took was a vote to get them approved.

I am subscribed to a Sizzle thread but I have not kept up with it since I got out of my project.

Well I Think I Found Out What My Little Roo Is He Looks Like He Will Be A Non-Bearded, He Has No Bearded Running Down Like My Other Female And Male Does, I Got Him From A Tractor Suply And The Bad Thing Is I Have All Bearded Silkies Will It Hurt The Quality And What Will I Get If I Bread Him When He Is Older With My Bearded Silkie Hen Please Let Me Know His Pic Is Bellow



I Also Found What Color My Roo Is I'm Still Not For Sure I Found A Pic Of A Wheaten Female And It Kinda Looks Like Him? Anyone Think He Could Be A Wheaten Please Let Me Know? And How Rare Its It To Get A Wheaten?

Sizzles, being an unaccepted breed, are still just mutts. Lots of breeders are working hard to change that, but thats where we are right now. I started my project accidentally, and got lucky with the birds I used. My original cross was a frazzled (double dose frizzle) Cochin hen and a really nice quality Silkie rooster. I only kept back one pullet, because she had all the traits i was looking for. She isnt the prettiest bird in the world:

Curly Sue may have a small crest, but she nailed it everwhere else. I crossed her back to a different really nice Silkie roo and the chicks you see in the picture were the result. My f2s were much nicer. Heres one I held onto:

Much better, right? I also kept a few frizzled Sizzles and Silkies that were of the same quality. Skip a head a few generations and this is where I'm at now:





I've just recently acquired two very nice roosters (a Silkie and a Showgirl) and I expect my next hatch will be even better. Its been a really fun project. Since I'm still crossing back to Silkies, each hatch is like Christmas since I'm still getting frizzles and smooths in both feather types. Eventually I'll set my Sizzles up in their own pen and breed out the Silkie feathering and everyone will be kept separate. But, I feel like I still have some tweaking to do.
