Silkie thread!

Ouch! How did a dog manage to get to her? My Partridge was traumatized as a chick growing up in a pen of large fowl chicks and is still very timid at 5 yrs old. She has very little confidence to stick up for herself.

Silkies IMO require other Silkie companions if mixed with large fowl. I never keep one lone Silkie in a mixed flock. Your fluffies are so sweet!

Silkies do typically stick together ~ even to the point of sharing a nestbox to go to sleep!

Would the same be said of Silkie roosters? Have two young silkies in with a flock of a bit older birds, they've been introduced to the others and fairly well integrated, but definitely stick together, and will cry when separated. Just wondering if two roos would behave that way or if maybe I have a pair or pullets?

Roosters will also behave that way. I have 2 polish bantam roosters that are very close like that even now that they are grown. :)

I'm following this thread because I am interested in learning more about silkies. We are interested in ordering some from MPC, when they become available... Anyway, we are looking into particularly the white and blue varieties most likely but not fully decided.

I ordered my Silkies from my pet chicken. 1 White and 2 blue all 3 are 2 months old and healthy. As soon as you see the colours you want available you need to order. Thet sell out very fast. I placed my order in December to have them shipped in June. A few weeks after ordering they were sold out! So you may need to order 6 months or so in advance.

Sleeping beauty has really got lighter last few days any idea on her color??? My breeder was thinking she my be from her porcelain silkie

Based on some of the silkiechicks I have hatched, I would say light partridge or possible blue partridge. Almost certainly a partridge.

Here is blue partridge at about same age as your and here she is a month or 6 weeks later.

She is a little darker than your chick but I've had lighter partridge chicks. Just can't find a picture of one this minute.

Your chick is cute anyway. I think you'' be pleased with how shed comes out regardless of the color.

Breeds will mix together in a flock but it is funny to note how often the same breeds will hang out with each other at mid-day, snooze times, or casual foraging, or even next to each other at roost. What's the old sayings? "Like begets like" or "birds of a feather flock together" or you get the idea! My two Silkies are strangely not best buddies but they often will be near each other when toodling around in the yard. For this reason I prefer to have at least 2 Silkies in the flock. They will go near a large fowl at times but seem to prefer to stay near each other.
