Silkie thread!

SOP = Standard of Perfection listed for breeds in the American Bantam Assn and American Poultry Assn. These assn's list breed standards established and accepted as the "perfect" qualities breeders aim for when breeding for show standards. Many Silkies, in fact all chicken breeds, will not always be "perfect" as there is no perfect bird - only birds that come very close to perfection and are considered best by the judgment of subjective judges at shows. Many owners have bred beautiful Silkies but will have 6 toes on one foot and 4 toes on the other -- otherwise gorgeous Silkies but the dears have to be sold as pet quality even if everything else is beautiful on them. Still lovely Silkies as eye candy for the yard or family backyard fluffballs but they'll not be considered SOP. They'll still be sweet Silkies like any other Silkie but just not breed/show quality.

More tattered, faded, molting, dirty, or matted Silkies - I could shampoo them weekly, but why? They just get dirty again!

Thanks for that.

Your babies are gorgeous. Do you ever bathe them in winter? Would you dry them with a hairdryer and then put them in ccop at night?

Thanks again.

Ok how much light do my chickens need?? idk if i am doing something wrong I thought chickens lay less eggs in the winter?? I am using x-mas lights no heat lamps 9am-9pm I have 3 brody silkies and I am getting 10-12 eggs a day! I have 10 silkies two are rooster three aren't laying yet, 9 other hens 3 are molting I read they don't lay when they are molting is that wrong?? My ee didn't lay for like two months when she was molting. I know my chickens are spoiled but I don't think that makes more eggs!! my friend has 40 silkies and maybe get three a day!

I'm just watching for now but I got 4 wonderful silkie chicks from a great breeder. I have 2 buffs, 1 white, and 1 splash. Looking forward to seeing them grow up more and so excited my little splash baby is starting to get the more splash markings on the feathers coming in.

Hello all! Can you help me sex my blue silkies? The are 3 months old. First 3 pics are of azul. Next is sky. Thanks

Having the light will do the trick. My hens are also laying, and we just had -4 degree weather two days/nights straight. No silkies..I have a smooth SG though, and she is laying great...knocking on wood. Don't want her to go broody!

My friend didn't think x-mas lights would be enough. I have tarps completely covering the sides because I didn't want to keep them locked in the coop! the other day it was -15 the actually temp not wind chill I was so scared up almost all night! but everyone made it all night with no heat!! thank god!!

what is a smooth sg? I have a little of everything i didn't know what i would like!!! I ended up with more silk then anything because i know a breeder!!! some are sizzles and frizzles

A smooth SG is a Show Girl, only smooth feathered, not fluffy like a silkie. I love this little girl. She lays great, and nice large ones. Very very sweet.

My sweet smooth SG. Uggums. (she was sooo homely when growing up) Name stuck. :)

Fluffy SG..a cockerel here.

This might sound stupid but do show girls get cold in the winter with those naked necks? They are so ugly in a cute way. I think I want one, lol.

My Uggums has gone through one, now this one..and it's worse than last year. I give my birds calf manna in the winter, here and there, for their protein. Boss also. I think that helps. They aren't normally getting those bugs they get in the summer months.
