Silkie thread!

Oh yeah. Forgot to post the picture of the large cockerel.

:love   Can't wait until my Dec. babies get to this size..I have one blue, that is a few weeks older than the ones I have inside.   She/he is getting very pretty.

They really are stunning! I love this color, regardless of the fact that it's not approved. I've heard it called chinchilla, and I think that's the perfect description. :)

As much as I would LOVE to have him, WI is quite a drive from FL. =(

Yeah, you wouldn't want to take that road trip this time of the year anyway. ;) We were at Fort Myers Beach last week, and the temp went from 84 to 18 during the 3 hr flight. lol. And the 18 was a heat wave - it had been below zero.

I rehomed him yesterday! A lady came to look at some chicks and fell in love with him. He was struttin' like a peacock, putting on a show. lol

Well... I guess I'm going to give it a try. One of my fluff heads is a bit thin, and I think it's because she misses food when pecking too often. Even when I hold some wet feed clumps in my hand she tends to miss abut 4/5 tries. I've started feeding a moist mash in a tray for them and that seems to really help.
One of my boys needs a trim too.
I sure do adore all that fluff though.

And they are so sweet.

I've never trimmed feathers on any of our breeds. We have only two older Silkie hens and I catch them nibbling each other's eye fluff and take care of their own vision. Also, our two girls are free-rangde so crest, beard, leg, and toe feathers all get worn down from scratching and dust-bathing. They are so beautiful after a molt but in a couple weeks they're fluff and crests get matted, tangled, separated or pressed together and don't need trimming:

Our Partridge got so grungy from molting feather shafts and muddy tush so we gave her a bath and blow dry.

Molting is bringing in some fluffy feathering on these old girls:

But most of the time we see our Silkies like this where their eyes are definitely no longer fluffed over after free-ranging! They look like they've been in a dog fight but that tells me they've been busy foraging and exploring!

That IS good news!

I had some sort of mutation pop up in a cockerel last year. He's just over 4 pounds. I'm currently running an experiment with him over a few hens. I want to know if he passes the size along. One of his chicks from my new years hatch has been noticeably larger than the others since it was a week old.
I had a few of those Giant silkie Roosters, called "Vietnamese silkies" they are designed as meat birds. They eat them for their culture- celebrating ceremonies such as weddings and pregnancies.

The few I had were Very strong and actually could swim perfectly. I found this out when they bravely ran into the swimming pool chasing after us

The U.K. and Europe has both large fowl and bantam Silkies. On FeatherSite.com their Silkie page shows the difference in size between the LF and bantam Silkies -- so cute!
