Silkie thread!

IMG_4488.JPG IMG_4499.JPG IMG_4505.JPG IMG_4518.JPG So I received 4 silkie babies yesterday from a very reputable breeder, one they gave me as it's feet are a little messed up. I am wondering if there is anything I can do for this baby, like rehab just by foot movements, or if it will just have to be like this till it passes? The other babies are beautiful and perfect, this one I am calling Hope.

Tell the breeder. He will probably replace it. Unless you just want a project.

I think they would have killed it if I hadn't taken it, cause they gave it to me free.
That stinks. Even with that foot, it will still probably be a good mom. I read this on another thread today. Someone had a chicken with a curled up foot. they told her to tape the foot open, and just let the chick do its thang. Must don't over extend it, if its a tendon issue, then it can really hurt the chick. Help it stretch it out.

However I am not a authority about this.

You could try helping it's toes and feet be straighter and make little "sandals" with a cardboard (we found business card thickness worked best) for the bottom and bandaid for the tops. You'll have to keep checking and try to keep straightening the toes as you go and as the chick grows. You can find a good tutorial about what you are trying to accomplish from the chicken chick here: http://www.the-chicken-chick.com/2012/02/spraddle-leg-in-baby-chicks-what-is-it.html?m=1

How do I contact you about pricing, payment etc? Im interested in doing this. Silkies are so delightfully, incredibly ugly, but cute at the same time. I think I need a hundred of them in my back yard. However I don't think my wife would like it. however my 2 year old will love them.

I sent you a private message with my contact number. Thanks

How many chicks would you consider too many for a broody Silkie to raise. Would time of year make a difference? We are in the 80's with fairly high humidity. Could she handle more if there was also a Brinsea (can't remember it's name) but the thing the chicks can run under to get warm.........

The warmer it is the more they can handle in my opinion. My normal sized hens do best at 12 or less chicks. One of my few big girls is now broody and I'm going to see how many she can handle. Just set eggs last night.

I have a very enclosed house for them for the first few weeks and put the Ecoglow brooder in as well for the last broody as it was still colder when I gave her incubator chicks. She parked her butt beside it and the chicks went under both for several days. When they quit using it I removed it.

It was supposed to be two hens co-brooding since mine like to do that but the other hen was a newbie and got too upset at the chick peeping so I moved her out.
