Silkie thread!

8 weeks old. I think it's a cockerel but not 100% sure. Opinions? It's the blue in the front.

About 3.5 to 4 months I think. Not crowing or laying yet. Hope these will help it's hard to get a good shot because he or she is so dark.

It's really hard to tell on most silkies at a young age.

I still have a few almost 9 week partridge that could go either way and partridge color in different depending on sex.

Yeah I'd heard they can be tricky. I have 13 8-9 week old chicks and I'm trying to pick out boys to get rid of. I have some with a good bit of comb development and red wattles and some with nothing. I have 3 Reds that I've known gender of since 4 weeks but others I'm having a hard time of.

Hi friends! Looking for some honest opinions... :)

I'm new to Silkies and currently have 5 - 4.5 wk old Silkie chicks. I constantly see tons of photos of beautiful grown Silkies with huge crests and lots of feathering but mine seem a little, ummmm.....awkward looking.(Although I think they're darling). I'm guessing/hoping "Silkie puberty" stage possibility.

I purchased these strictly for pets, but in part because of how cute they are! Mine are hatchery chicks and I'd done a lot of research and ordered from the place that seemed to have the best reviews.

If any of you wouldn't mind takin' a look at one of my little ones (they all look pretty similar) and with honesty - and tell me if you think I have decent quality babies, for a hatchery chicks.

Although I know it's really early, If you'd like to guess the sex, that'd be ok too ;)

Thank you! Y'all are so great on here! I feel blessed to have found BYC!

Oh, lastly, I've been noticing over the last few days that 2 of my chicks chirping has gotten lower in tone than the others - at this age is that any indication of a cockrel?

The crests are just starting to come in at that age. You can see the start of them.

Seeing actual quality takes until they grow up. I only cull for faults at early ages. It takes until they are well over 6 months for me to see who looks good. I usually wait until 8 months.

There is such thing as crests that are too big. This is too much. Poor girl walks into things all the time. Usually me as she stalks me.
