Silkie thread!

It is going to be hard to give advice on chicks. At this age your looking to cut any that do not have 5 toes, dark skin or straight combs. Other than those things if breeding and/or showing is in your plans I highly recommend you try to grow them all out until 7 months old to make sure you are not rehoming any potentials for breeding or show winners. If breeding what colors are you going to focus on? Will you have space to divide different colors into breeding pens? Mixing color for breeding can be an issue if you want to show or for the chicks to have show potential. Answering these questions might help to decide a few more that can go because they don't fit in your breeding plans.

Thank's for that good advice! I'm starting to do silkies also! I just have to get my hand's on some good whites, and showgirl's.

I’m so excited I found some Silkie chicks in my absolute favorite variety Gray. So I bought all 5 she was willing to part with. Now I have 20 chicks I’m growing out.

This is one of my silkies with some chicks that she hatched for other hens. She's a great mum!
I realize that giving your silkie a regular haircut probably counts as sacrilege in these circles... but all our chickens free-range and therefore need to see where they're going. They always become much more agile after visiting the chicken barber

I like the hairstyle I will have to do this for mine

Those chicks are too young to be in the flock and not have a heat source or a broody hen to protect them. I move my 1 week old chicks out of the house brooder and into a section off area of the coop with mama heat pad and own food and water. I use a wire dog pen, the chicks can get away from bullying but the bigger chickens can’t get in or keep them from the feed.

Okay I'm going to try clarify. Poof and Floof are my teenage silkies. The chicks you see are actually under the care of my adult hen who is doing a really good job with them. Poof and Flood are fully feathered and didn't need heat anymore so I integrated them from the Rubbermaid tub.

Thankfully they all mostly get along now

Oh that makes since from the way it was worded I thought you were trying to get the hen to take care of the young chicks that you had just taken out of the brooder.

Ahhh yeah no. I gave the adult the tiny chicks as day olds since her eggs didn't hatch properly. She's been a happy momma ever since
